When she imagines a skating rink for future winters in Brussels, she takes Central Park in New York City as an example. What if we took NYC also as an example for outdoor swimming in future summers?

De link tussen een Brusselse park in de sneeuw en openluchtzwemmen in New York is misschien niet meteen evident, maar een Instagram post van Ans Persoons, schepen voor urbanisme van de stad Brussel, was een mooie aanleiding voor een vergelijking. Wanneer ze zich een schaatsbaan voorstelt voor toekomstige winters in Brussel neemt zij zich het Central Park in New York City als voorbeeld. Wat als we NYC ook eens als voorbeeld zouden nemen voor openluchtzwemmen in toekomstige zomers?

51 Outdoor swimming pools in New York
To keep it simple, we only look at the public outdoor pools run by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, not taking into account numerous privately run outdoor pools (for example at sports clubs or Hotels) and the beaches on Coney Island or Rockaway: there are 51 public outdoor swimming pools in New York City!
Not all pools are equal, with pools ranging from small playground pools to intermediate pools (roughly 25 m), to olympic size pools and even much larger pools, with the Astoria Park Pool on the upper end, measuring 100 x 50 m.
Besides the sheer number of pools it’s remarkable that they are all for free, without an entrance fee! Free swimming classes are offered to people of all ages, and there is free sunscreen available for the swimmers. However, this generous offer comes with strict regulations for the use of the pools regarding what you are allowed to bring into the pool area and what you can wear for swimming. You can check the details on the website of the Park Authority. On the map below you can find all the outdoor pools of New York which are currently open (if it wasn’t for the season and Covid).

Pour simplifier, nous ne prenons en compte que les piscines extérieures publiques gérées par le département des parcs et loisirs de la ville de New York, sans tenir compte des nombreuses piscines extérieures privées (par exemple dans les clubs sportifs ou les hôtels) et des plages de Coney Island ou de Rockaway : il y a 51 piscines publiques en plein air à New York !

Om het eenvoudig te houden, kijken we alleen naar de openbare buitenzwembaden die door het New York City Department of Parks & Recreation worden gerund, en houden we geen rekening met de talrijke privébuitenzwembaden (bijvoorbeeld bij sportclubs of hotels) en de stranden op Coney Island of Rockaway: er zijn 51 publieke openluchtzwembaden in New York City!
Niet alle zwembaden zijn gelijk, met zwembaden variërend van kleine speelbadjes tot middelgrote zwembaden (ongeveer 25 m), tot olympische zwembaden en zelfs veel grotere zwembaden, met het Astoria Park Pool aan de bovenkant, met een afmeting van 100 x 50 m.

If you were simply looking at the numbers, the comparison is simple: 51 pools in New York vs. still embarrassing 0 pools in Brussels. But how many pools are needed in Brussels to level the number of New York, bearing in mind that New York City has seven times the number of inhabitants than the Brussels Capital Region?
Simple math based on the number of inhabitants tells us that it’s not exaggerated if there were 8 public outdoor swimming pools (of all sizes) in the Brussels Capital Region, of which 2 should be situated in the City of Brussels.
And as there are beaches and commercial pools in New York, additional swimming ponds, canal swimming and privately run pools should add up to a variety of diverse outdoor swimming places in Brussels.

Comparaison entre New York et Bruxelles

What’s happening in Brussels?
Luckily Brussels’ authorities understood that something has to happen in order to reintroduce public outdoor swimming in Brussels. The ambition to realize swimming places is taken up into the majority agreement of the current government of the Brussels Capital Region, also the City of Brussels has mentioned the realization of a natural outdoor swimming pool as an explicit ambition for this legislation.
A press article of last summer sums up the progress that was made so far, showing that something is happening, but also that it takes time. Today we can tell that the study for the swimming pond in Neerpede / Anderlecht, has started and that the idea for an outdoor pool in Forest, close to the Wiels art centre, is taken up into a masterplan that sketches ambitions for the future.
Unfortunately there is not much news about the next steps of the City of Brussels after a feasibility study that was finalized in june 2020. This study was commissioned by the alderman for Sports, Benoit Hellings (Ecolo), but it will be necessary to coordinate the project also with other members of the college of aldermen and alderwomen, among them mayor Philippe Close (PS), alderman for Participation Arnaud Pinxteren (Ecolo) and of course alderwomen for Urbanism Ans Persoons (SP.A / change.brussels).
In her story on Instagram, Ans Persoons mentions the Park of Laeken as a good location for an ice rink, and we couldn’t agree more. One of the five potential locations mentioned in the feasibility study was the former American Theatre in the Park of Laeken. For us an interesting location that could combine an outdoor swimming pool in the park with a cultural venue in the American Theatre, re-using the remnants of this architectural gem from the Expo ‘58 while mutualizing functions like a bar or restaurant, terraces and lockers. An ice skating rink in the winter would be the cherry on the cake.

Heureusement, les autorités bruxelloises ont compris qu'il fallait faire quelque chose pour réintroduire la baignade publique en plein air à Bruxelles. L'ambition de réaliser des lieux de baignade est reprise dans l'accord majoritaire du gouvernement actuel de la Région Bruxelles-Capitale, aussi la Ville de Bruxelles a mentionné la réalisation d'une piscine naturelle en plein air comme une ambition explicite pour cette législation.
Un article de presse de l'été dernier résume les progrès réalisés jusqu'à présent, montrant que quelque chose est en train de se passer, mais aussi que cela prend du temps. Aujourd'hui, nous pouvons dire que l'étude pour l'étang de baignade de Neerpede / Anderlecht a commencé et que l'idée d'une piscine extérieure à Forest, près du centre d'art Wiels, est reprise dans un plan directeur qui esquisse des ambitions pour l'avenir.
Malheureusement, il n'y a pas beaucoup de nouvelles sur les prochaines étapes de la Ville de Bruxelles après une étude de faisabilité qui a été finalisée en juin 2020. Cette étude a été commandée par l'échevin des Sports, Benoit Hellings (Ecolo), mais il faudra également coordonner le projet avec d'autres membres du collège des échevins, parmi lesquels le bourgmestre Philippe Close (PS), l'échevin de la Participation Arnaud Pinxteren (Ecolo) et bien sûr l’échevine de l'Urbanisme Ans Persoons (SP.A / change.brussels).
Dans son story sur Instagram, Ans Persoons mentionne le parc de Laeken comme un bon endroit pour une patinoire, et nous ne pourrions pas être plus d'accord. L'un des cinq sites potentiels mentionnés dans l'étude de faisabilité est l'ancien Théâtre Américain dans le Parc de Laeken. Pour nous, c'est un endroit intéressant qui pourrait combiner une piscine extérieure dans le parc avec un lieu culturel dans le théâtre américain, en réutilisant les vestiges de ce joyau architectural de l'Expo 58 tout en mutualisant les fonctions comme un bar ou un restaurant, des terrasses et des casiers. Une patinoire en hiver serait la cerise sur le gâteau.

Gelukkig hebben de Brusselse autoriteiten begrepen dat er iets moet gebeuren om het publiek openluchtzwemmen in Brussel te herintroduceren. De ambitie om zwemplaatsen te realiseren is opgenomen in het meerderheidsakkoord van de huidige regering van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest, ook de Stad Brussel heeft de realisatie van een natuurlijk openluchtzwembad genoemd als expliciete ambitie voor deze legislatuur.
Een persartikel van afgelopen zomer geeft een overzicht van de vooruitgang die tot nu toe is geboekt, waaruit blijkt dat er iets gebeurt, maar ook dat het tijd vergt. Vandaag kunnen we melden dat de studie voor de zwemvijver in Neerpede / Anderlecht, van start is gegaan en dat het idee voor een openluchtzwembad in Vorst, vlakbij het kunstencentrum Wiels, wordt opgenomen in een masterplan dat ambities schetst voor de toekomst.
Helaas is er niet veel nieuws over de volgende stappen van de Stad Brussel na een haalbaarheidsstudie die in juni 2020 werd afgerond. Deze studie werd uitgevoerd in opdracht van schepen van Sport, Benoit Hellings (Ecolo), maar het project zal ook moeten worden gecoördineerd met andere leden van het schepencollege, waaronder burgemeester Philippe Close (PS), schepen van Participatie Arnaud Pinxteren (Ecolo) en natuurlijk schepen van Stedenbouw Ans Persoons (SP.A / change.brussels).
In haar verhaal op Instagram noemt Ans Persoons het Park van Laken als goede locatie voor een ijsbaan, en daar zijn we het helemaal mee eens. Een van de vijf potentiële locaties die in de haalbaarheidsstudie worden genoemd, is het voormalige Amerikaanse Theater in het Park van Laken. Voor ons een interessante locatie die een openluchtzwembad in het park zou kunnen combineren met een cultureel centrum in het Amerikaanse Theater, waarbij de overblijfselen van dit architecturale pareltje van de Expo '58 worden hergebruikt en functies zoals een bar of restaurant, terrassen en lockers worden gebundeld. Een schaatsbaan in de winter zou de kers op de taart zijn.
