BRRRUSSELS is back

A new cold water season starts. Here is what happened last winter, what we have in mind for 2026-2027, and everything you need to know if you want to join us.

Looking back at 2025-2026

Our first full season as BRRRUSSELS is behind us, and it went better than we dared to hope.

Between 25 November 2025 and 24 May 2026 we organised 12 cold water sessions in seven places: five private pools, one fountain, and one lake outside Brussels. One place welcomed us four times, two places twice, four places once. In total around 750 people took a dip with us.

One question remains: Where are the pools in the east of Brussels? 🤔

All of this was arranged by volunteers: a core team of seven, supported by 12 session helpers. Everything ran without a single incident. And we were lucky with the weather, with only one genuinely rainy Sunday in the whole season.

Thank you to the five private pool owners who opened their pool, their garden and sometimes even their house to a crowd of strangers in swimwear.

Thank you to the Mechelse Ijsberen Alleman winter swimming club, who welcomed us as visitors to the Eglegem pond in Mechelen in March.

Thank you to the cabinet of the City of Brussels alderwoman for sport, who invited us for a meeting after our guerrilla swim in the freshly filled basin of Sint Katelijne at the end of March. We’re curious to hear how the search they announced for ways to realise outdoor swimming in Brussels has advanced in the meantime.

Thank you to everyone who joined us during the season. It was great to see a real community of cold water enthusiasts coming back again and again, alongside new faces at every session who simply wanted to try it.

And thank you to our team and to everyone who helped to make the sessions happen.

The new season

We’ll be starting again very soon and we’ll keep going all winter. Make sure you’ve registered for the newsletter to receive the info and invitation first. Subscribe here!

Expect a diverse programme: private pools with limited capacity, the occasional special spot with no limits on capacity, visits to swimming sites and clubs outside Brussels, and the odd guerrilla action to keep up the pressure for outdoor swimming places in Brussels. Put 3 January in your agenda for the New Year's dive.

We’re always looking for new places to swim. Do you know someone with a pool who would be happy to host a small, chilly crowd on a Sunday morning? Let us know at info@pooliscool.org.

HOW BRRRUSSELS WORKS

 • We’ll swim irregularly. Dates will drop first via this newsletter - make sure you and your friends are on the list!

 • Spots are limited. Reservations are mandatory.

 • Locations are secret. You’ll get the meeting point a few days before, and we trust you to keep the address to yourself.

 • Expect dips, not laps. The pools are small, but the chill is real.

 • Facilities vary. Don’t count on changing rooms, toilets, or bicycle parking.

 • Be kind and on time. Respect the property and your 30-minute slot — that’s how we keep this possible.

 • We ask for a contribution at every session. This isn’t a profit, it’s what keeps BRRRUSSELS and POOL IS COOL running. More about that below.

 • A session in a nutshell: be at the meeting point on time, get changed, enjoy the cold water, get dressed, share hot tea and a chat, make a contribution, hugs and see you next time.

+ Something special worth mentioning: Come during your booked slot. Last season it seemed that a few people with an early reservation quietly showed up at a later slot instead. Mornings are complicated, we know. But our locations are small and every slot is planned carefully, so an unexpected arrival at the wrong moment puts real pressure on the host, on the volunteers and on the people who came on time. If something goes wrong, please send us a message rather than improvising.

We would much rather keep trusting everybody than have to start checking reservations at the gate, which would be a lot less community-like, and no fun for the volunteer holding the list of names.

Join the team

BRRRUSSELS only exists because people make it exist. There are two ways you can step in.

As a member of the core team, you’re involved in organising and communicating about the season.

As a session volunteer, you help a session run smoothly, mainly welcoming and informing participants. Volunteers are guaranteed a place in the pool and can bring a friend along.

Interested in either? Write to info@pooliscool.org.

Where BRRRUSSELS comes from

BRRRUSSELS is the continuation of POOL IS COLD.

POOL IS COLD started as cold water swimming on Sunday mornings at FLOW, the pool that POOL IS COOL operated at the canal in Brussels (read about FLOW here). It was a success from the beginning, with up to 200 swimmers during the two-hour sessions, sometimes swimming in a frozen pool, sometimes with DJs, always with hot tea and a great community atmosphere. Two winter seasons long, organised by volunteers.

When FLOW closed in 2025, the POOL IS COLD community risked disappearing with it. One member of the team had the idea to invite people to her own pool: ridiculously small, in her back garden. It was an immediate success, fully booked at once, with a great atmosphere. There was no real swimming, but plenty of dipping, chatting and hot tea afterwards. The concept was there to stay. We found more people willing to welcome us, and we decided the initiative needed its own name, independent from POOL IS COOL and ready to survive whatever comes next in the political and societal context. BRRRUSSELS was born.

Today BRRRUSSELS is still administratively linked to and supported by POOL IS COOL for its communication and organisation infrastructure, insurance and so on. But everyone who makes it happen is an independent volunteer.

And BRRRUSSELS remains an activist community. It supports POOL IS COOL’s fight for proper outdoor swimming places for everyone, in summer and in winter. Swimming in the private pools of inhabitants is fun and a great community activity, but it is absolutely not a solution for the lack of outdoor swimming places in this city. It’s a way to keep the community alive, to let it grow, and to remind all of us what is missing in Brussels: water to swim in, outdoors, for everyone.

Why we ask for a contribution

We are often asked what the money you contribute at a session is for. It’s a fair question. BRRRUSSELS is run by volunteers, and the owners and organisations who host us receive no financial compensation, only a small thank you gift. So why do we ask for money?

BRRRUSSELS is organised administratively by POOL IS COOL, and that costs money: websites, the reservation system, the newsletter, insurance, basic equipment such as first aid, and occasionally lifeguards. Most of what we collect goes straight into this.

A significant part also supports the other activities of POOL IS COOL in the fight for outdoor swimming in Brussels. Think of the Sunday Swims that we’re working on behind the scenes, where there are some positive developments, without any certainty yet that it will be possible next summer. Or the Chien Marin sessions we organised this summer, which underlined the potential of clean spring water for swimming in Brussels.

Both are good initiatives, but a summer like the one we just had makes it clear that Brussels needs much more, and needs it fast. That’s why we are also dreaming of temporary summer pools in the car parks or courtyards of existing indoor pools, using infrastructure and staff that are already there, to reduce the financial and organisational thresholds for realisation as much as possible. Or of making fountains accessible as places for summer refreshment, which requires interventions to make them safe and easy to use.

All of this needs research, preparation and equipment. And therefore money, now and in the future.

See you in the cold

 • On va nager irrégulièrement.

BRRRUSSELS is terug

Zo werkt BRRRUSSELS

We gaan onregelmatig zwemmen.

Reserveren is verplicht.

Waar BRRRUSSELS vandaan komt

BRRRUSSELS was geboren.
