From FLOW to a new model for outdoor swimming
We are currently running our crowdfunding campaign JE VEUX NAGER to support the work of POOL IS COOL and the future of FLOW. But why would we ask for your money for a pool that is already built?
Because you are not funding a pool, but a model for the future!
With FLOW, we are not only operating the only outdoor pool in Brussels, but we are also developing a new model for the management of outdoor pools. Our goal is for FLOW to be an example of the social and environmental potential of urban outdoor pools in the way it is built and operated.
Swimming pools as socio-cultural anchors
FLOW is open to everyone, for swimming but also movies, concerts and workshops. The rules at FLOW are based on the belief in a diverse society where everyone should feel comfortable participating in public activities. FLOW became a hub of social life, bringing together people from the close neighborhood and the whole region of Brussels. We would like to strengthen this role as a meeting place by extending it to the colder seasons with a sauna or hammam where people can gather around hot and cold water all year round. With swimming courses, we teach children (and adults) how to swim safely, which can literally save lives in the future.
FLOW is run by a team of young people from the neighbourhood who are gaining first work experience. By telling their friends and families about it, the number of people involved grows much larger than we could ever achieve ourselves. Some of these young people of the first season are joining us again this year, taking up roles with more responsibility like leading the team of the day or managing the new kiosk. FLOW is a place where people can grow. The experience gained from working in a swimming pool can later be important in other areas when it comes to dealing with people, structuring teamwork or supervising technical infrastructures. We would like to expand this educational aspect of FLOW in the future by offering trainings to become lifeguards and team coordinators.
The combination of these different aspects anchors the pool in its local and social context, it creates a strong bond with its users and supports the social cohesion in a city like Brussels with an incredibly diverse population. People will remember FLOW as a place where they had a good time.
In the future back to nature
Today, the water of all of Brussels’ public swimming pools is treated chemically to guarantee its quality. This require a lot of energy for pumps and chemicals like chlorine. In the future the water of FLOW should be treated by natural cleaning processes in plant filters, something that is already common for many public outdoor pools in countries like Germany or France. These processes require far less energy and maintenance, and no chemicals at all.
The experience with pools abroad (but also in Antwerp and Dour in Belgium) convinced the Brussels government to change the regulation to allow such natural water treatment methods in the future. With the support of our crowdfunding campaign, FLOW can become a first reference project for ecological water treatment in Brussels. Together with us, the Brussels authorities can gain initial experience on a small scale before applying this technique on a large scale for permanent bathing sites in the future.
A model that goes further than FLOW
POOL IS COOL has been advocating for outdoor swimming in Brussels since 2015, with FLOW as its latest achievement built in 2021. It was developed based on the experience of countless projects and activities over the past years. But FLOW, our small pop-up swimming pool, is not the solution for a city the size of Brussels. What we need are many outdoor swimming pools all over the city*. If you compare Brussels with Berlin and its 28 bathing places, taking into account the different number of inhabitants, Brussels should have at least 9 outdoor swimming places! This is probably a vision for a rather distant future, but the first steps have been taken. Brussels Environment, the environmental agency of the region, is working on a swimming pond in Neerpede, Anderlecht. POOL IS COOL was involved in the development of the concept. The ambitious goal is to open this swimming pond in the summer of 2024. But while the design and financing of the project itself are in place, the question of how to manage this swimming pond has not yet been resolved. Having contributed to the management study for the pond with our experience with FLOW, we believe that the basic ideas of FLOW can be applied there as well.
This is not just wishful thinking, and the issue of managing urban outdoor swimming facilities is not limited to Brussels. In fact, POOL IS COOL was asked to propose a management structure for a new outdoor swimming pool in Leuven, based on the experience with FLOW. We have formed a new non-profit organisation, POP, which will take over the management of this swimming pool in the 'Vaartkom' once it is completed in 2024. This shows that FLOW is already having a very practical impact for outdoor swimming in Belgium.
How about POOL IS COOL or POP becoming the partner that runs the future swimming facilities in Brussels in a sustainable, accessible and socially relevant way?

We want to use this time to learn and experiment while offering you, the people of Brussels, a place to enjoy a fresh dive on a hot summer day, and much more. Nous menons actuellement notre campagne de crowdfunding JE VEUX NAGER pour soutenir le travail de POOL IS COOL et l'avenir de FLOW. Mais pourquoi vous demanderions-nous de l'argent pour une piscine qui est déjà construite ?
Parce que vous ne financez pas une piscine, mais un modèle pour l'avenir !
Avec FLOW, nous n'exploitons pas seulement la seule piscine extérieure de Bruxelles, mais nous développons également un nouveau modèle pour la gestion de ces piscines. Notre objectif est que FLOW soit un exemple du potentiel social et environnemental des piscines extérieures urbaines dans la manière dont elle est construite et gérée.
Les piscines comme points d'ancrage socioculturels
FLOW est ouvert à tous, pour la baignade mais aussi pour les films, les concerts et les ateliers. Les règles de FLOW sont basées sur la croyance en une société diversifiée où chacun doit se sentir à l'aise pour participer à des activités publiques. FLOW est devenu un centre de vie sociale, rassemblant des personnes du voisinage proche et de toute la région bruxelloise. Nous souhaitons renforcer ce rôle de lieu de rencontre en l'étendant aux saisons plus froides avec un sauna ou un hammam où les gens peuvent se retrouver autour de l'eau chaude ou froide toute l'année. Avec les cours de natation, nous apprenons aux enfants (et aux adultes) à nager en toute sécurité, ce qui peut littéralement sauver des vies à l'avenir.
FLOW est géré par une équipe de jeunes du quartier qui acquièrent ainsi une première expérience professionnelle. En en parlant à leurs amis et à leurs familles, le nombre de personnes impliquées augmente bien plus que nous ne pourrions jamais le faire nous-mêmes. Certains de ces jeunes de la première saison nous rejoignent à nouveau cette année, en assumant des rôles avec plus de responsabilités comme la direction de l'équipe du jour ou la gestion du nouveau kiosque. FLOW est un lieu où les gens peuvent se développer. L'expérience acquise en travaillant dans une piscine peut ensuite être importante dans d'autres domaines lorsqu'il s'agit de traiter avec des personnes, de structurer le travail d'équipe ou de superviser des infrastructures techniques. Nous aimerions développer cet aspect éducatif de FLOW à l'avenir en proposant des formations pour devenir maître-nageur et coordinateur d'équipe.
La combinaison de ces différents aspects ancre la piscine dans son contexte local et social, elle crée un lien fort avec ses utilisateurs et soutient la cohésion sociale dans une ville comme Bruxelles où la population est incroyablement diverse. Les gens se souviendront de FLOW comme d'un endroit où ils ont passé un bon moment.
DANS LE FUTUR, RETOUR À LA NATURE
Aujourd'hui, l'eau de toutes les piscines publiques bruxelloises est traitée chimiquement pour garantir sa qualité. Cela nécessite beaucoup d'énergie pour les pompes et des produits chimiques comme le chlore. A l'avenir, l'eau de FLOW devrait être traitée par des processus de purification naturels dans des filtres végétaux, ce qui est déjà courant pour de nombreuses piscines extérieures publiques dans des pays comme l'Allemagne ou la France. Ces processus nécessitent beaucoup moins d'énergie et d'entretien, et aucun produit chimique.
L'expérience avec les piscines à l'étranger (mais aussi à Anvers et à Dour en Belgique) a convaincu le gouvernement bruxellois de modifier la réglementation pour autoriser ces méthodes de traitement naturel de l'eau à l'avenir. Avec le soutien de notre campagne de crowdfunding, FLOW peut devenir un premier projet de référence pour le traitement écologique de l'eau à Bruxelles. Avec nous, les autorités bruxelloises peuvent acquérir une première expérience à petite échelle avant d'appliquer cette technique à grande échelle pour les sites de baignade permanents dans le futur.
UN MODÈLE QUI VA PLUS LOIN QUE FLOW
POOL IS COOL se bat pour la baignade en plein air à Bruxelles depuis 2015, avec FLOW comme dernière réalisation construite en 2021. Elle a été développée sur la base de l'expérience d'innombrables projets et activités au cours des dernières années. Mais FLOW, notre petite piscine pop-up, n'est pas la solution pour une ville de la taille de Bruxelles. Ce dont nous avons besoin, c'est de nombreuses piscines en plein air dans toute la ville*. Si vous comparez Bruxelles à Berlin et ses 28 lieux de baignade, en tenant compte du nombre différent d'habitants, Bruxelles devrait avoir au moins 9 lieux de baignade en plein air ! Il s'agit probablement d'une vision pour un avenir assez lointain, mais les premiers pas ont été faits. Bruxelles Environnement, l'agence environnementale de la région, travaille sur un étang de baignade à Neerpede, Anderlecht. POOL IS COOL a participé à l'élaboration du concept. L'objectif ambitieux est d'ouvrir cet étang de baignade à l'été 2024. Mais si la conception et le financement du projet lui-même sont en place, la question de la gestion de cet étang de baignade n'est pas encore résolue. Ayant contribué à l'étude de gestion de l'étang grâce à notre expérience avec FLOW, nous pensons que les idées de base de FLOW peuvent être appliquées là aussi.
Il ne s'agit pas d'une idée fixe, et la question de la gestion des installations de baignade en plein air en milieu urbain ne se limite pas à Bruxelles. En fait, on a demandé à POOL IS COOL de proposer une structure de gestion pour une nouvelle piscine en plein air à Louvain, sur la base de l'expérience avec FLOW. Nous avons créé une nouvelle association sans but lucratif, POP, qui reprendra la gestion de cette piscine dans le 'Vaartkom' une fois qu'elle sera terminée en 2024. Cela montre que FLOW a déjà un impact très concret pour la baignade en plein air en Belgique.
Et si POOL IS COOL ou POP devenait le partenaire qui gère les futures installations de baignade bruxelloises d'une manière durable, accessible et socialement pertinente ?

Il est donc important que nous puissions tirer le meilleur parti de FLOW en tant que prototype pour développer cette manière responsable de gérer les infrastructures de baignade. FLOW a le potentiel pour durer encore quelques années. Nous voulons utiliser ce temps pour apprendre et expérimenter tout en vous offrant, à vous, les Bruxellois, un endroit pour profiter d'un plongeon frais par une chaude journée d'été, et bien plus encore. VAN FLOW NAAR EEN NIEUW MODEL VOOR OPENLUCHTZWEMMEN
Wij zijn momenteel bezig met onze crowdfunding campagne JE VEUX NAGER om het werk van POOL IS COOL en de toekomst van FLOW te steunen. Maar waarom zouden wij uw geld vragen voor een zwembad dat al gebouwd is?
Omdat u niet een zwembad financiert, maar een model voor de toekomst!
Met FLOW beheren wij niet alleen het enige openluchtzwembad in Brussel, maar wij ontwikkelen ook een nieuw model voor het beheer van openluchtzwembaden. Ons doel is dat FLOW een voorbeeld wordt van het sociale en ecologische potentieel van stedelijke openluchtzwemplaatsen in de manier waarop het gebouwd en beheerd wordt.
ZWEMBADEN ALS SOCIO-CULTURELE ANKERS
FLOW is voor iedereen toegankelijk, om te zwemmen maar ook voor films, concerten en workshops. De regels bij FLOW zijn gebaseerd op het geloof in een diverse samenleving waar iedereen zich op zijn gemak moet voelen om aan openbare activiteiten deel te nemen. FLOW is een knooppunt van sociaal leven geworden, dat mensen uit de naaste omgeving en uit het hele Brusselse gewest samenbrengt. Wij willen deze rol als ontmoetingsplaats versterken door deze uit te breiden naar de koudere dagen met een sauna of hammam waar mensen het hele jaar door kunnen samenkomen rond warm en koud water. Met zwemcursussen leren wij kinderen (en volwassenen) veilig zwemmen, wat in de toekomst letterlijk levens kan redden.
FLOW wordt gerund door een team van jongeren uit de buurt, die er hun eerste werkervaring opdoen. Door hun vrienden en familie erover te vertellen, groeit het aantal betrokkenen veel groter dan wij zelf ooit zouden kunnen bereiken. Sommige van deze jongeren van het eerste seizoen komen dit jaar terug en nemen taken op zich met meer verantwoordelijkheid, zoals het leiden van de ploeg van de dag of het beheren van de nieuwe kiosk. FLOW is een plaats waar mensen kunnen groeien. De ervaring die men opdoet bij het werken in een zwembad kan later van belang zijn op andere gebieden, wanneer het gaat om de omgang met mensen, het structureren van teamwerk of het beheer van technische infrastructuren. Wij willen dit educatieve aspect van FLOW in de toekomst graag uitbreiden door opleidingen tot redder en teamcoördinator aan te bieden.
De combinatie van deze verschillende aspecten verankert het zwembad in zijn lokale en sociale context, het schept een sterke band met zijn gebruikers en ondersteunt de sociale cohesie in een stad als Brussel met een ongelooflijk diverse bevolking. De mensen gaan zich FLOW herinneren als een plaats waar ze een leuke tijd hebben gehad.
IN DE TOEKOMST TERUG NAAR DE NATUUR
Tegenwoordig wordt het water van alle openbare zwembaden in Brussel chemisch behandeld om de kwaliteit ervan te garanderen. Dat vergt veel energie voor pompen en chemicaliën zoals chloor. In de toekomst moet het water van FLOW behandeld worden met natuurlijke reinigingsprocessen in plantenfilters, iets wat al gebruikelijk is voor veel openbare openluchtzwembaden in landen als Duitsland of Frankrijk. Deze processen vergen veel minder energie en onderhoud, en helemaal geen chemicaliën.
De ervaring met zwembaden in het buitenland (maar ook in Antwerpen en Dour in België) heeft de Brusselse regering ervan overtuigd de regelgeving te wijzigen om dergelijke natuurlijke waterbehandelingsmethoden in de toekomst toe te staan. Met de steun van onze crowdfunding-campagne kan FLOW een eerste referentieproject worden voor ecologische waterzuivering in Brussel. Samen met ons kan de Brusselse administratie de eerste ervaring op kleine schaal opdoen, alvorens deze techniek in de toekomst op grote schaal toe te passen voor permanente zwemplaatsen.
EEN MODEL DAT VERDER GAAT DAN FLOW
POOL IS COOL pleit al sinds 2015 voor openluchtzwemmen in Brussel, met FLOW als meest recente verwezenlijking, gebouwd in 2021. Het is ontwikkeld op basis van de ervaring van talloze projecten en activiteiten in de afgelopen jaren. Maar FLOW, ons kleine pop-up zwembad, is niet de oplossing voor een stad van de omvang van Brussel. Wat wij nodig hebben zijn vele openluchtzwembaden over de hele stad*. Als u Brussel vergelijkt met Berlijn en zijn 28 zwemplaatsen, rekening houdend met het verschillende aantal inwoners, zou Brussel minstens 9 openluchtzwemplaatsen moeten hebben! Dit is waarschijnlijk een visie voor een tamelijk verre toekomst, maar de eerste stappen zijn al gezet. Leefmilieu Brussel, het milieuagentschap van het gewest, werkt aan een zwemvijver in Neerpede, Anderlecht. POOL IS COOL was betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van het concept. Het ambitieuze doel is deze zwemvijver te openen in de zomer van 2024. Maar terwijl het ontwerp en de financiering van het project zelf rond zijn, is de vraag hoe deze zwemvijver moet worden beheerd nog niet beantwoord. Aangezien wij met onze ervaring met FLOW hebben bijgedragen tot de studie over het beheer van de zwemvijver, zijn wij van mening dat de basisideeën van FLOW ook daar kunnen worden toegepast.
Dit is geen vast idee, en de kwestie van het beheer van stedelijke openluchtzwemgelegenheden is niet beperkt tot Brussel. POOL IS COOL is zelfs gevraagd om een beheersstructuur voor te stellen voor een nieuw openluchtzwembad in Leuven, op basis van de ervaring met FLOW. Wij hebben een nieuwe vzw opgericht, POP, die het beheer van dit zwembad in de "Vaartkom" zal overnemen zodra het in 2024 klaar is. Dit toont aan dat FLOW nu al een zeer praktische impact heeft op het openluchtzwemmen in België.
Waarom zou POOL IS COOL of POP niet de partner worden die de toekomstige zwemfaciliteiten in Brussel op een duurzame, toegankelijke en maatschappelijk relevante manier beheert?
STEUN EEN KLEINE STAP NAAR EEN GROTERE TOEKOMST
Het is dus belangrijk dat wij het uiterste halen uit FLOW als prototype om deze verantwoorde manier van beheer van zweminfrastructuur te ontwikkelen. FLOW heeft het potentieel om nog een paar jaar mee te gaan. Wij willen deze tijd gebruiken om te leren en te experimenteren, terwijl wij u, de Brusselaars, een plaats willen bieden om op een warme zomerdag van een frisse duik te genieten, en nog veel meer. Daarvoor hebben wij jullie hulp nodig door JE VEUX NAGER via www.growfunding.be/pooliscool te steunen, onze crowdfunding-campagne om alle kleine stapjes te kunnen doen die ons verder brengen naar de grotere toekomst waar wij allemaal van dromen: openluchtzwemmen voor elke Brusseleir als de normaalste zaak van de wereld.
