New director of the Port of Brussels positive about swimming in the canal
Gert Van der Eeken was recently appointed as new director general of the Port of Brussels for the next five years. In a report about him in BRUZZ, he says something newsworthy: According to him the canal of Brussels should become even more of an environment where different city functions come together.
"In addition to the economy, recreation, and the residential and green function are becoming very important. Now it is a waterway and that is exactly where it ends. The Brussels region is green, but something is missing on the water. People need a connection to the water."
But Van der Eken becomes even more explicit when he talks about swimming in the canal:
"In Scandinavia I have seen that the water quality was abysmal 20 years ago and now people are swimming there. I myself think that there are too few swimming facilities. Swimming in the canal, why not? But let's not forget that the port is an economic engine. Swimming on weekdays? I don't know if that's feasible. But having said that, it is not impossible to go swimming in the canal. Let's look at that without taboos."

Le nouveau directeur du Port de Bruxelles est favorable à la baignade dans le canal
Gert Van der Eken a récemment été nommé nouveau directeur général du Port de Bruxelles pour les cinq prochaines années. Dans un reportage qui lui est consacré dans BRUZZ, il tient des propos dignes d'intérêt : Selon lui, le canal bruxellois doit devenir encore plus un environnement où se rencontrent différentes fonctions de la ville.
"En plus de l'économie, les loisirs et la fonction résidentielle et verte deviennent très importants. Aujourd'hui, c'est une voie d'eau et c'est exactement là où elle s'arrête. La région bruxelloise est verte, mais il manque quelque chose sur l'eau. Les gens ont besoin d'une connexion avec l'eau."
Mais Van der Eken devient encore plus explicite lorsqu'il parle de baignade dans le canal :
"En Scandinavie, j'ai vu que la qualité de l'eau était exécrable il y a 20 ans et maintenant les gens s'y baignent. Pour ma part, je pense qu'il y a trop peu d'installations de baignade. Se baigner dans le canal, pourquoi pas ? Mais n'oublions pas que le port est un moteur économique. La baignade en semaine ? Je ne sais pas si c'est faisable. Mais ceci dit, il n'est pas impossible de se baigner dans le canal. Regardons cela sans tabous".

Nieuwe directeur van de Haven van Brussel positief over zwemmen in het kanaal
Gert Van der Eeken is onlangs benoemd tot nieuwe directeur-generaal van de Haven van Brussel voor de komende vijf jaar. In een reportage over hem in BRUZZ zegt hij iets nieuwswaardigs: Volgens hem moet het kanaal van Brussel nog meer een omgeving worden waar verschillende stadsfuncties samenkomen.
“Naast economie worden recreatie, de woon- en groenfunctie erg belangrijk. Nu is het een waterweg en daar houdt het precies op. Het Brussels gewest is groen, maar er ontbreekt iets aan het water. Mensen hebben de behoefte aan een verbinding met het water."
Maar Van der Eken wordt nog explicieter als hij het over zwemmen in het kanaal heeft:
“In Scandinavië heb ik gezien dat de waterkwaliteit twintig jaar geleden erbarmelijk was en nu zijn de mensen daar aan het zwemmen. Ik vind zelf dat er te weinig zwemgelegenheden zijn. Zwemmen in het kanaal, waarom niet? Maar laat ons niet vergeten dat de haven een economische motor is. Op weekdagen zwemmen? Ik weet niet of dat haalbaar is. Maar dit gezegd zijnde: het is niet onmogelijk om te gaan zwemmen in het kanaal. Laat ons daar zonder taboes naar kijken."
Wij zijn bijzonder blij zo'n positieve houding te horen ten opzichte van het zwemmen in het kanaal in de toekomst.
