NO POOL 2020,
WE GO FOR 2021!
We were almost there, about to realise a fantastic project for 2020 ... and then Corona came along. After EXPEDITION SWIM in the ponds of Brussels in 2019, we were planning to build an actual temporary outdoor swimming pool for the summer of 2020.
We chose the Biestebroeck basin in Anderlecht as a suitable location, following requests by several municipal aldermen to consider a temporary swimming pool there. The neighbourhood is at the dawn of a major transition process, with new residential and commercial buildings, including a new brewery for Brussels Beer Project, along with redeveloped public spaces. The first sign of change is the 'Hangar du Kanaal' project with space for sustainable businesses and an ambitious summer programme on the soon car-free quay around 'La Mouette', the Guinguette from the Parc de Forest team. This seemed an appropriate context, in which to provide the refreshment of a temporary open-air swimming pool to all Brussels residents from across the region. Meanwhile, we wanted to actively involve people from the neighbourhood in its development and management, to create a project that brings new visitors and current residents together around the shared enjoyment of the water. Financing was also almost complete, with positive feedback from the cabinets of various Brussels ministers, the municipality of Anderlecht, visit.brussels along with the developers of the new buildings around the Biestebroeck basin ... then Corona put a spoke in the wheel!
We have still tried to organize a project at least for the late summer because many people will not go on holiday this year, motto staycation, which means even more need for refreshment in the city. But since it is neither clear how events can once again take place nor when swimming pools will be able to re-open, we have concluded with a heavy heart that there won't be enough time for professional project preparation. As such, we have decided to stop the swimming pool project for 2020. We find it incredibly sad, but we hope you understand.
More so, because we’re leaving it at that! The work that has already been completed will not be lost. After positive feedback from all parties involved, we want to get started right away with the preparing for the Brussels Summer Pool 2021 ! And not just that. For 2020, we had thought that the best thing would be to repeat it all in the years to come! So we are taking this as a premise to develop a project that can be repeated each summer from 2021 onwards! And in the long term, we hope that this temporary swimming pool will be the final step before a permanent outdoor swimming pool in the Biestebroeck quarter will be created, just as the Port's captain proposed during our "What's next?!" event in December 2019.
Ultimately it is very unfortunate that there won't be an open air swimming pool in Brussels during the summer of 2020, at a time when it is a real necessity for so many inhabitants. But we are nonetheless motivated to begin work on the summers still to come!
And while the preparations for the 2020 project were mainly behind the scenes – as we still had to get to know some of the parties involved – we now want to play with open cards wherever possible. So you can expect regular updates ...

PAS DE PISCINE 2020,
NOUS VISONS 2021 !
Nous y étions presque réaliser un projet fantastique pour 2020 ... et puis vint Corona. Après l’EXPEDITION SWIM dans les étangs de Bruxelles en 2019, nous avions prévu de réaliser une véritable piscine extérieure temporaire pour l'été 2020.
Le choix d'un emplacement approprié a enfin été décidé : le bassin de Biestebroeck à Anderlecht, après que plusieurs échevins municipaux nous aient demandé de réfléchir à une piscine temporaire à cet endroit. Le quartier est au début d'un processus de transition important, avec la construction de nouveaux logements et bureaux; une nouvelle brasserie pour Brussels Beer Project, ainsi que des nouveaux espaces publics. Le premier signe de changement est le projet "Hangar du Kanaal" avec la création de nouveaux espaces pour l'implantation d’entreprises durables ainsi qu’un ambitieux programme estival sur le quai. Le quai sera fermé à la circulation automobile autour de "La Mouette", la guinguette de l'équipe du Parc de Forest. Ce contexte nous a semblé approprié pour offrir un peu de fraîcheur aux Bruxellois de toute la région avec la création d'une piscine temporaire en plein air. D'autre part, nous voulions impliquer activement les riverains des quartiers alentours dans le développement et l'utilisation d'un projet autour des plaisirs de l'eau rassemblant les nouveaux visiteurs et les résidents actuels. Le financement était également presque complet, avec des réactions positives des cabinets de différents ministres bruxellois, de la municipalité d'Anderlecht, de visit.brussels et aussi des promoteurs des nouveaux bâtiments autour du bassin de Biestebroeck ... et puis le Corona est arrivé… faisant tout tomber à l'eau !
Nous avons essayé d'organiser un projet au moins pour la fin de l'été car beaucoup d'habitants ne pourront pas partir en vacances cette année, devise staycation. L'occasion parfaite pour se rafraîchir en ville. Hors nous ne savons pas. Nous ne savons pas comment les événements pourront avoir lieu à nouveau et surtout… quand les piscines pourront ouvrir à nouveau. Nous avons donc décidés, le cœur lourd, que le temps de préparation pour un tel projet et dans ces conditions ne pourra pas suffire. C'est pourquoi nous avons décidé de mettre en pause la piscine en 2020. Nous trouvons cela extrêmement triste et nous espérons votre compréhension.
Mais n'en resterons pas là ! Le travail déjà accompli dans le cadre du projet ne sera pas inutile. Grâce aux réactions positives de toutes les parties prenantes, nous voulons commencer dès maintenant à préparer une Brussels Summer Pool 2021 ! Et pas seulement cela. Pour le projet 2020, on a pensé qu'il serait préférable de le répéter dans les années à venir ! Nous envisageons donc maintenant de développer un projet qui pourra également avoir lieu au cours des étés suivants à partir de 2021 ! A long terme, nous espérons que cette piscine temporaire ne sera que la dernière étape avant la réalisation d'une réelle piscine extérieure permanente dans le quartier de Biestebroeck, tout comme elle a été proposée par le capitaine du port lors de notre événement "What's next" en décembre 2019.
En fin de compte, il est très regrettable qu'il n'y ait pas de piscine en plein air à Bruxelles pendant l'été 2020, à un moment où elle pourrait vraiment être nécessaire pour tant d'habitants de Bruxelles. Mais malgré cela, nous sommes motivés de commencer à travailler sur les étés à venir !
Et si les préparatifs du projet 2020 se sont principalement déroulés en coulisses, car nous devions encore faire connaissance avec certaines des parties concernées, nous voulons maintenant jouer avec des cartes ouvertes chaque fois que cela est possible. Vous pouvez donc vous attendre à des mises à jour régulières ...

GEEN ZWEMBAD 2020,
WE GAAN VOOR 2021!
We zijn er bijna geraakt om een fantastisch project voor 2020 te realiseren ... en dan kwam Corona. Na EXPEDITION SWIM in de vijvers van Brussel in 2019 waren wij van plan om voor de zomer van 2020 een echte tijdelijke openluchtzwembad te realiseren.
De keuze voor een gepaste locatie viel op het Biestebroeckdok in Anderlecht na dat wij van meerdere schepen van de gemeente gevraagd werden om over een tijdelijk zwembad op die plaats na te denken. De wijk staat aan het begin van een grote transitieprocess, met nieuwe gebouwen voor wonen en werken, onder andere een nieuwe brouwerij voor Brussels Beer Project, en heraangelegde publieke ruimtes. Het eerste teken van verandering is het project 'Hangar du Kanaal' met ruimte voor duurzame bedrijven en een ambitieus zomerprogramma op de autovrij gemaakte kade rond 'La Mouette', de Guinguette van het team uit de Park van Vorst. Dit leek ons de gepaste context om langs de ene kant met een tijdelijke openluchtzwembad verfrissing voor Brusselaars uit het hele gewest te bieden. Langs de andere kant wouden wij mensen uit de wijk actief betrekken bij ontwikkeling en uitbating om tot een project te komen dat nieuwe bezoekers en huidige bewoners samenbrengt rond waterplezier. Een ook de financiering was bijna rond, met positief feedback vanuit de kabinetten van verschillende Brusselse ministers, de gemeente Anderlecht, visit.brussels en ook de projectontwikkelaars van de nieuwe gebouwen rondom het Biestebroeckdok ... en dan maakte Corona een streep door de rekening!
Wij hebben nog geprobeerd om een project te organiseren tenminste voor de late zomer omdat vele mensen dit jaar niet op vakantie zullen gaan, motto staycation, en dus nog meer nood zal zijn aan verkoeling in de stad. Maar gezien het tot vandaag niet duidelijk is hoe evenementen terug kunnen plaatsvinden en wanneer zwembaden terug kunnen open gaan hebben wij met een zwaar hart beseft dat er geen tijd meer blijft voor een professionele projectvoorbereiding. Daarom hebben wij besloten om met het zwembad voor 2020 te stoppen. Wij vinden dat ongelofelijk triestig, maar wij hopen op jullie begrip.
Dit des te meer omdat wij het daar niet bij laten! Het werk dat in het project al werd gestoken zal niet voor niets gewest zijn. Door het positieve feedback van alle betrokkenen partijen willen wij meteen aan de slag gaan met de voorbereidingen voor een Brussels Summer Pool 2021! En niet alleen dat. Voor het project van 2020 werd erover nagedacht dat het best ook in de komende jaren kan herhaald worden! Wij zijn dus nu van plan om meteen een project te ontwikkelen dat vanaf 2021 ook in de daaropvolgende zomers kan plaatsvinden! En op lange termijn hopen wij dat dit tijdelijke zwembad slechts de laatste stap is voordat een permanent openluchtzwemplaats in de Biestebroeckwijk gerealiseerd zal worden, net zo als het de Havenkapitein tijdens ons evenement "What's next?!" in December 2019 voorstelde.
Uiteindelijk is het heel spijtig dat er ook tijdens de zomer van 2020 geen openluchtzwembad zal bestaan in Brussel, op een moment dat het echt nodig is voor zo veel Brusselaars. Maar desondanks zijn wij gemotiveerd om meteen werk te maken van de zomers die nog zullen komen!
En terwijl de voorbereidingen van het project voor 2020 vooral achter de schermen gebeurde, gezien wij sommige van de betrokken partijen nog moesten leren kennen, willen wij nu waar mogelijk met open kaarten spelen. Jullie kunnen dus geregeld een update verwachten ...
