Five weeks of EXPEDITION SWIM and even more than a year of preparations are behind us. First of all we want to thank Bruxelles Environnement to start and develop this adventure with us. EXPEDITION SWIM was conceived from the beginning as a combination of research and event, testing the possibility of outdoor swimming in the existing waters of Brussels while respecting the ecological importance of the ponds. We focused the research on two main directions: firstly, is there actually an interest among the people of Brussels to swim in the ponds of the city? And secondly, are the ponds we tested already fit for swimming?

Cinq semaines d'EXPEDITION SWIM et même plus d'un an de préparation sont derrière nous. Tout d'abord, nous tenons à remercier Bruxelles Environnement pour avoir commencé et développé cette aventure avec nous. EXPEDITION SWIM a été conçue dès le début comme une combinaison de recherche et d'événement, testant la possibilité de nager en plein air dans les eaux existantes de Bruxelles en tenant compte de l'importance écologique des étangs. Nous avons centré la recherche sur deux directions principales : premièrement, les Bruxellois ont-ils réellement envie de se baigner dans les étangs de la ville ? Et deuxièmement, les étangs que nous avons testés sont-ils déjà prêts pour accueillir la baignade ?

Vijf weken EXPEDITION SWIM en meer dan een jaar van voorbereidingen zijn achter de rug. Allereerst willen we Leefmilieu Brussel bedanken om samen met ons dit avontuur aan te gaan. EXPEDITION SWIM werd vanaf het begin opgevat als een combinatie van onderzoek en evenement, waarbij wij de mogelijkheid om in de bestaande wateren van Brussel te zwemmen, met respect voor het ecologische belang van de vijvers, wilden testen. We hebben het onderzoek gefocust op twee hoofdvragen: ten eerste, is er wel degelijk interesse onder de Brusselaars om in de vijvers van de stad te zwemmen? En ten tweede, in hoeverre zijn de door ons geteste vijvers al geschikt om in te zwemmen?
EXPEDITION 1 - 19.+20.07.2019 - Neerpede / Grand Étang de la Pede.

There are two things that we remember most: the huge public interest in EXPEDITION SWIM, the online inscriptions were fully booked in less than a week, and the many happy faces of those that seized the chance for a swim at the first expedition in Neerpede, Anderlecht. It was fantastic to see so many people of all kinds enjoying the water in the sun for real for the first time in more than 40 years since the closing of the last swimming pool in Brussels.
Il y a deux choses dont nous nous souvenons le plus : l'énorme intérêt du public pour EXPEDITION SWIM, les inscriptions en ligne étaient complètes en moins d'une semaine, et les nombreux visages heureux de ceux qui ont saisi l'occasion de se baigner lors de la première expédition à Neerpede, Anderlecht. C'était fantastique de voir autant de gens de tous les coins de Bruxelles profiter de l'eau au soleil pour la première fois en plus de 40 ans depuis la fermeture de la dernière piscine en plein air à Bruxelles.
Er zijn twee dingen die we ons het meest herinneren: de grote publieke interesse in EXPEDITION SWIM, de online inschrijvingen waren in minder dan een week tijd volgeboekt, en de vele gelukkige gezichten van diegenen die de kans hebben gegrepen voor een plons tijdens de eerste expeditie in Neerpede, Anderlecht. Het was fantastisch om zoveel mensen in de zon te zien genieten van het water, voor het eerst in meer dan 40 jaar sinds de sluiting van het laatste openluchtzwembad in Brussel.
EXPEDITION 2 - 03.+04.08.2019 - Pêcheries Royales / Koninklijke Visserij
Unfortunately, the seconed expedition had to be canceled due to the fluctuating water quality in the pond. Read more about it here. However, someone had to recuperate the swimming lines which were already placed. So Paul and Daniel of the EXPEDITION SWIM TEAM dared to take a swim.

Helaas moest de tweede expeditie worden afgelast vanwege de fluctuerende waterkwaliteit in de vijver. Lees er hier meer over. Wel moest iemand de reeds geplaatste zwemlijnen recupereren. Dus durfden Paul en Daniel van de EXPEDITION SWIM TEAM een duik te nemen.
On the other hand, the unfortunate fact that we couldn’t swim in the two other ponds that were selected for EXPEDITION SWIM also revealed that the ponds of Brussels aren’t ready yet for swimming. It’s mainly the water quality that is still too volatile. While it was good for most of the summer, it became insufficient at the very moment of two of the three expeditions. The reasons for this fluctuation of the water quality needs to be further investigated in order to consider swimming in the future.
D'autre part, le fait malheureux que nous n'ayons pas pu nager dans les deux autres étangs sélectionnés pour EXPEDITION SWIM a également révélé que les étangs de Bruxelles ne sont pas encore aptes à accueiliir la baignade. C'est surtout la qualité de l'eau qui est encore trop volatile. Bien qu'elle ait été bonne pendant la majorité des jours de l'été, elle se montrait insuffisante au moment même de deux des trois expéditions. Les raisons de cette fluctuation de la qualité de l'eau doivent faire l'objet d'une étude plus approfondie afin d'envisager la baignade dans l'avenir.
Doordat wij niet konden zwemmen in de twee andere vijvers die voor EXPEDITION SWIM geselecteerd waren, bleek langs de andere kant dat de vijvers van Brussel in principe nog niet klaar zijn om erin te zwemmen. Het is vooral de waterkwaliteit die nog te veel schommelt. Hoewel de kwaliteit het grootste deel van de zomer goed was, werd ze telkens net op het moment van twee van de drie expedities onvoldoende. Als we ook in de toekomst in de vijvers willen zwemmen, moeten de redenen voor deze schommeling van de waterkwaliteit verder worden onderzocht.
EXPEDITION 3 - 17.+18.08.2019 - Bois de la Cambre / Ter Kamerenbos.
Also on the second alternative date we had to cancel the swimming at Bois de la Cambre due to the water quality. But since we wanted to end EXPEDITION SWIM with a positive note, we built a little sauna and had different but great aquatic fun. The pontoon and the swimming zone communicated the idea of swimming in the future.
Aussi à la deuxième date alternative, nous avons dû annuler la baignade au Bois de la Cambre à cause de la qualité de l'eau. Mais comme nous voulions terminer EXPEDITION SWIM avec une note positive, nous avons construit un petit sauna et nous avons eu des plaisirs aquatiques différents mais très amusants. Le ponton et la zone de baignade ont communiqué l'idée de la baignade dans l'avenir.
Ook op de tweede alternatieve datum moesten we het zwemmen in Bois de la Cambre afzeggen vanwege de waterkwaliteit. Maar omdat we EXPEDITION SWIM met een positieve noot wilden afsluiten, bouwden we een kleine sauna en hadden we een andere maar geweldige waterpret. Het ponton en de zwemzone brachten het idee van zwemmen in de toekomst tot uitdrukking.
We will now start working on an in-depth evaluation of EXPEDITION SWIM. The resulting report will be published during an event later this year and should serve as a basis for extensive discussions with the new Government of the Brussels Region, Bruxelles Environnement, the communes and of course the citizens of Brussels. What could swimming in ponds or the canal be like in the future? What role can it play next to classic open air swimming pools?
Once more, thank you to everyone who helped us to make EXPEDITION SWIM possible. To all the people working in administration and politics, at companies, institutions and services. And especially to the many volunteers who spent their time on building, running and communicating EXPEDITION SWIM throughout the weeks. It would have been impossible without you. We built up an amazing network of skilled people that we can count on for amazing projects in the future!
Nous allons maintenant commencer à travailler sur une évaluation approfondie d'EXPEDITION SWIM. Le rapport qui en résultera sera publié lors d'un évenement qui se tiendra dans le courant du fin de l’année et devrait servir de base à des discussions approfondies avec le nouveau gouvernement de la Région bruxelloise, Bruxelles Environnement, les communes et bien sûr les citoyens bruxellois. À quoi pourrait ressembler la baignade dans les étangs ou le canal à l'avenir ? Quel rôle peut-elle jouer à côté des piscines en plein air ?
Encore une fois, merci à tous ceux qui nous ont aidés à rendre EXPEDITION SWIM possible. A tous ceux qui travaillent dans l'administration et la politique, dans les entreprises, les institutions et les services. Et surtout aux nombreux bénévoles qui ont consacré leur temps à bâtir, à gérer et à communiquer EXPEDITION SWIM au cours des semaines. Cela aurait été impossible sans vous. Nous avons construit un réseau incroyable de personnes qualifiées sur lesquelles nous pouvons compter pour des projets extraordinaires à l'avenir !
We gaan nu aan de slag met een grondige evaluatie van EXPEDITION SWIM. Het rapport zal later dit jaar tijdens een evenement gepubliceerd worden en moet als basis dienen voor een uitgebreide discussie met de nieuwe Brusselse regering, Leefmilieu Brussel, de gemeenten en natuurlijk de Brusselaars. Hoe zou het zwemmen in vijvers of het kanaal er in de toekomst uit kunnen zien? En welke rol kan het spelen naast nieuwe openluchtzwembaden?
Nogmaals dank aan iedereen die ons geholpen heeft om EXPEDITION SWIM mogelijk te maken. Aan iedereen in de administratie en politiek, bij bedrijven, instellingen en diensten. En vooral aan de vele vrijwilligers die hun tijd hebben besteed aan het bouwen, runnen en communiceren van EXPEDITION SWIM door de weken heen. Zonder jullie allen zou het onmogelijk zijn geweest. We hebben een indrukwekkend netwerk van mensen opgebouwd waar we op kunnen rekenen voor geweldige projecten in de toekomst!
