The BIG JUMP BXL 2018 was a festive summer swimming event at the canal in Anderlecht, like all the years before, but we won’t repeat it this year. And here is why:

Le BIG JUMP BXL 2018 a été un événement de baignade estival festif dans le canal à Anderlecht, comme toutes les années précédentes, mais nous ne le referons pas cette année. Et voici pourquoi :

De BIG JUMP BXL 2018 was een feestelijk zomerzwemevenement in het kanaal te Anderlecht, net zoals alle jaren daarvoor, maar dit jaar zullen we het niet herhalen. En hier is waarom:
Despite the fact that swimming in the canal is officially still forbidden and the refusal of the harbor to authorise the BIG JUMP in the canal of Brussels, it has always been ignored by authorities and the harbor for many years. However, after the BIG JUMP of 2018 we received a letter from the harbor with a fine of € 1.000 for the organisation of this sole summer swim in the canal.
Accepting our responsibility for this act of civil disobedience, we took the fine as reason to reach out to the harbor with the request to organize the BIG JUMP 2019 together, providing a safe swimming environment as part of the EXPEDITION SWIM program. However, even after talks on the level of the director of the harbor and the cabinet of the minister of environment, the latter supporting the idea, the harbor refused a cooperation. They refer to safety issues which seem no problem for similar swimming events in other parts of the canal outside Brussels.
Malgré que la baignade dans le canals est toujours officiellement interdit et le refus du port d'autoriser le BIG JUMP BXL dans le canal de Bruxelles, cet événement a toujours été ignoré par les autorités et le port pendant de nombreuses années. Par contre, après le BIG JUMP de 2018, nous avons reçu une lettre du port avec une amende de 1.000 € pour l'organisation de cet baignade d'été singulier dans le canal.
Acceptant notre responsabilité pour cet acte de désobéissance civile, nous avons pris l'amende comme raison pour s’adresser au port avec la demande d'organiser le BIG JUMP 2019 ensemble, offrant un environnement sécurisé pour la baignade dans le cadre du programme EXPEDITION SWIM. Cependant, même après des discussions au niveau du directeur du port et du cabinet du Ministre de l'Environnement, dont la dernière soutenait l'idée, le port a refusé une coopération. Ils font référence à des questions de sécurité qui ne semblent pas poser de problème pour des événements de natation similaires dans d'autres parties du canal à l'extérieur de Bruxelles.
Ook al is zwemmen in het kanaal nog steeds officieel verboden en weigerde de haven om de BIG JUMP BXL in het kanaal van Brussel toe te laten, toch werd dit evenement al jaren genegeerd door de autoriteiten en de haven. Na de BIG JUMP van 2018 ontvingen we daarentegen een brief van de haven met een boete van 1.000 euro voor de organisatie van dit eenmalig zomerzwemmen in het kanaal.
Omdat we onze verantwoordelijkheid voor deze burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid aanvaardden, namen we de boete aan als reden om de haven aan te spreken met de vraag om samen de BIG JUMP 2019 te organiseren en om zo een veilige zwemomgeving te creëren in het kader van EXPEDITION SWIM. Maar ook na gesprekken op het niveau van de directeur van de haven en het kabinet van de Minister van Leefmilieu, die het idee steunde, weigerde de haven een samenwerking. Zij verwijzen naar veiligheidskwesties die geen probleem lijken te zijn voor gelijkaardige zwemevenementen in andere delen van het kanaal buiten Brussel.

In the face of even more serious juridical consequences, we decided with a heavy heart NOT to organize the BIG JUMP BXL 2019 on Sunday, 14.07.2019, at 15h when it’s happening at hundreds of places throughout Europe.
Face à des conséquences juridiques encore plus graves, nous avons décidé de NE PAS organiser le BIG JUMP BXL 2019 le dimanche 14.07.2019, à 15h, quand il aura lieu dans de centaines de lieux en Europe.
Geconfronteerd met nog ernstigere juridische gevolgen, hebben we met pijn in het hart besloten om de BIG JUMP BXL 2019 NIET te organiseren op zondag 14.07.2019, om 15u, wanneer het op honderden plaatsen in Europa wel doorgaat.
A versatile future for the canal
We strongly believe that it is time for the harbor to reflect on its mission, taking into account the ecological value of the canal as the largest water habitat of Brussels and the societal value as a possible future recreation zone for different activities including outdoor swimming. The sole focus of the harbor on commercial activities and the logistical role of the canal as a water highway limits its potential as a qualitative urban space for the benefit of every inhabitant of Brussels. Since the Brussels Capital Region is the main shareholder of the harbor, it is also a political question that should be tackled by the new government that is in the making at this very moment.
Fear that a more diverse role of the canal could threaten the current activities of the harbor is unfounded. We see harbours all around the world that attract citizens to the water and we would love to see the same here in Brussels. Supported by reference projects all around the world, ranging from swimming in the canal itself to floating pools on the water or pools in the vicinity of the canal, we are sure that a coexistence of commercial activities, leisure functions and nature is possible. POOL IS COOL hopes for a cooperation with the harbor and other stakeholders to develop together a creative approach for the multifunctional canal of the future, starting with a canal swim event in 2020?!
Un avenir polyvalent pour le canal
Nous croyons fermement qu'il est temps pour le port de réfléchir à sa mission, en tenant compte de la valeur écologique du canal en tant que plus grand habitat aquatique de Bruxelles et de la valeur sociétale en tant que future zone de loisirs possible pour différentes activités, dont la baignade en plein air. L'accent mis par le port uniquement sur les activités commerciales et le rôle logistique du canal comme autoroute de l'eau limite son potentiel en tant qu'espace urbain de qualité au profit de chaque habitant de Bruxelles. Comme la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale est le principal actionnaire du port, c'est aussi une question politique qui devrait être abordée par le nouveau gouvernement en cours de formation.
La crainte qu'un rôle plus diversifié du canal puisse menacer les activités actuelles du port n'est pas fondée. Soutenus par des projets de référence dans le monde entier, allant de la baignade dans le canal lui-même aux piscines flottantes sur l'eau ou aux piscines à proximité du canal, nous sommes sûrs qu'une coexistence des activités commerciales, des loisirs et de la nature est possible. Nous voyons partout dans le monde des ports qui attirent les citoyens vers l'eau et nous aimerions voir la même chose ici à Bruxelles. POOL IS COOL souhaite une coopération avec le port et d'autres acteurs pour développer ensemble une approche créative pour le canal multifonctionnel du futur, à commencer par un événement de baignade en 2020 ?!
een veelzijdige toekomst voor het kanaal
Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat het tijd is voor de haven om na te denken over zijn missie, rekening houdend met de ecologische waarde van het kanaal als grootste waterhabitat van Brussel en de maatschappelijke waarde als mogelijke toekomstige recreatiezone voor verschillende activiteiten, waaronder openluchtzwemmen. De loutere focus van de haven op commerciële activiteiten en de logistieke rol van het kanaal als waterweg beperkt het potentieel van het kanaal als kwalitatieve stedelijke ruimte ten voordele van alle Brusselaars. Aangezien het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest de hoofdaandeelhouder van de haven is, is het ook een politieke kwestie die moet worden aangepakt door de nieuwe regering die op dit moment in wording is.
De vrees dat een meer gediversifieerde rol van het kanaal de huidige activiteiten van de haven in gevaar kan brengen, is ongegrond. Verwijzend naar referentieprojecten over de hele wereld, gaande van zwemmen in het kanaal zelf tot drijvende baden op het water of baden in de buurt van het kanaal, zijn we er zeker van dat een co-existentie van commerciële activiteiten, vrijetijdsfuncties en natuur mogelijk is. We zien overal ter wereld havens die burgers naar het water trekken en we zouden dat hier in Brussel ook graag willen zien. POOL IS COOL hoopt op een samenwerking met de haven en andere stakeholders om samen een creatieve aanpak te ontwikkelen voor het multifunctionele kanaal van de toekomst, beginnend met een kanaalzwemevenement in 2020?!

Well, we won’t organize a BIG JUMP at Ceria-Coovi in Anderlecht, but it’s up to you and on your own responsibility to jump into the water that you find tempting (Have a look at our general safety advice).

Wel, wij organiseren geen BIG JUMP op Ceria-Coovi in Anderlecht, maar het is aan u en op uw eigen verantwoordelijkheid om in het water te springen dat u verleidelijk vindt (Bekijk zeker onze algemene veiligheidsadviezen).
