Swimming in the canal of Paris was nice but already a bit chilly and not very relaxed since it’s actually forbidden. So we decided to visit a great example of pools that can be both, open in summer and closed when the temperature drops. There are several of such pools in Paris, mainly with roofs that slide open. The designers of the Piscine Georges Hermant came up with another trick: The roof is a tent that is pulled up and fixed to a pole when the weather is nice. A lightweight construction and a sign in the street that marks the otherwise modest building. The fabric of the tent allows light to pass through, resulting in a very bright space without artificial lighting.

Nager dans le canal de Paris était sympa mais déjà un peu froid et pas très détendu puisque c’est interdit. Nous avons donc décidé de visiter un excellent exemple de piscine qui peut être à la fois ouverte en été et fermée lorsque la température baisse. Il existe plusieurs de ces piscines à Paris, principalement avec des toits coulissants. Les concepteurs de la piscine Georges Hermant ont proposé une autre astuce: le toit est une tente qui est tirée et fixée à un poteau par beau temps. Une construction légère et une enseigne dans la rue qui marque le bâtiment par ailleurs modeste. Le tissu de la tente laisse passer la lumière, créant un espace très lumineux sans éclairage artificiel.

Zwemmen in het kanaal van Parijs was leuk, maar al een beetje koud en niet erg ontspannen omdat het eigenlijk verboden is. Dus besloten we om een bijzonder voorbeeld van zwembaden te bezoeken die allebei kunnen zijn, open in de zomer en gesloten wanneer de temperatuur daalt. Er zijn verschillende van dergelijke zwembaden in Parijs, voornamelijk met daken die open schuiven. De ontwerpers van de Piscine Georges Hermant bedachten een andere truc: het dak is een tent die wordt opgetrokken en aan een paal wordt bevestigd als het mooi weer is. Een lichtgewicht constructie en een baken in de straat dat het anders bescheiden gebouw markeert. De stof van de tent laat licht door, wat resulteert in een zeer heldere ruimte zonder kunstmatige verlichting.
The big advantage of such a hybrid construction, whether it’s a sliding roof or a tent, is obvious: such a swimming pool combines the qualities of an indoor pool, comfortable swimming independet from the weather, with an outdoor pool, swimming in the sun and social encounters around the water, on one site with the same staff throughout the whole year. It’s especially interesting for new pools when means and space are limited.
Le gros avantage d’une telle construction hybride, qu’il s’agisse d’un toit coulissant ou d’une tente, est évident: une telle piscine allie les qualités d’une piscine intérieure, de la natation confortable indépendante du temps, à une piscine extérieure, nager au soleil et rencontres sociales autour de l'eau, sur un site avec le même personnel tout au long de l'année. Il est particulièrement intéressant pour les nouvelles piscines lorsque les moyens et l’espace sont limités.
Het grote voordeel van een dergelijke hybride constructie, of het nu een schuifdak of een tent is, ligt voor de hand: een dergelijk zwembad combineert de kwaliteiten van een binnenzwembad, comfortabel zwemmen onafhankelijk van het weer, met een openluchtzwembad, zwemmen in de zon en sociale ontmoetingen rond het water, op één site met dezelfde staf gedurende het hele jaar. Het is vooral interessant voor nieuwe zwembaden als middelen en ruimte beperkt zijn.
