WATER QUALITY & PRESENCE OF AUTHORITIES: an UPDATE on the BIG JUMP BXL 2018
We have good news and some not so good news.
In short: the water quality of the canal was very good on Tuesday when we took the samples, just like last year, but it can not be guaranteed on Sunday due to the heavy rainfall on Wednesday night We also expect the authorities to show up for the BIG JUMP, so be aware that for both reasons the participation remains entirely on everyone’s personal responsibility. En bref: la qualité de l'eau du canal était très bonne mardi lorsque nous avons prélevé les échantillons, comme l'année dernière, mais elle ne peut être garantie dimanche en raison des fortes pluies de mercredi soir. Nous attendons également des autorités qu'elles se présentent au BIG JUMP, donc sachez que pour les deux raisons, la participation reste entièrement à la charge de chacun. We verwachten ook dat de autoriteiten zullen opdagen voor de BIG JUMP, dus wees u ervan bewust, zoals eerder al gezegd, dat de deelname om beide redenen volledig op ieders persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid rust. Here is a bit more explanation for those having time for a long-read.
We now have the results of the water tests from Brulabo and we can state that the water on Tuesday morning at the canal at Ceria-Coovi was of extraordinary quality regarding the parameters for swimming water (Enterococcus, E.Coli, Salmonella). Seen the good results also last year one could state the the water of the canal at Ceria-Coovi is in general of very good quality. The story could end here and we could jump on Sunday without doubts, wasn’t it for the heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening.
Brussels, like many cities all around the world, has a ‘combined sewage’ system. It means that sewage water and rain water are both ending up in the same pipes under the streets and both go together to the water treatment plants in the south and north of Brussels to be cleaned. This is usually no problem. Only on rare moments with heavy rainfall it can occur that the pipes can’t handle the amount of rain water, and that leads to overflows of untreated sewage water into the Senne or the canal, rain water mixed with sewage water from households and other buildings. Bluntly spoken, the shit flows into the water and the quality worsens.
We tried to verify if that actually happened on Wednesday night but unfortunately the responsible administrations can’t tell since they don’t know themselves. While the amount of water in the larger sewage collector pipes is constantly monitored (see www.flowbru.be) the data doesn’t allow them to draw the conclusion whether overflows occured or not. This requires a visit by personal on site which was not possible to schedule on such a short notice.
Due to the the necessary procedure for bacterial tests in the laboratory of Brulabo an additional test before the weekend was unfortunately not possible neither.
However, according to the available data, there are no overflow locations in the part of the canal in Brussels where we plan the BIG JUMP. The water in the canal flows slowly from south to north, the first overflow points are located at the lock of Aa, downstream (towards the city centre) of the lock. Even if an overflow occurs, the polluted water seems not reaching the part of the canal higher up where we plan the BIG JUMP. Unfortunately we couldn’t obtain information about possible overflow locations in the flemish part of the canal further south, in Sint Pieters Leeuw.
As you can see, we explicitly use a lot the subjunctive form in this explanation because we simply don’t know all the details and, more importantly, we can’t guarantee and can’t take up the responsibility for the water quality on Sunday at the BIG JUMP.
While we are aware of this problem ourselves, we also received a private message from an employee of the harbor reminding us. Already before we were contacted by harbor officials indirectly to prevent us and you from jumping, even though we never encountered problems in the past. We therefore expect authorities to show up on Sunday. We see the BIG JUMP as an act of civil disobedience to raise the problem of water quality and lack of public outdoor swimming in Brussels and we hope that this year’s edition will mark the turning point to bring the responsibles around the table in order to discuss and organize swimming in the canal officially, even if it’s only for the yearly BIG JUMP event for the time being.
Due to the two mentioned facts, that the water quality cannot be guaranteed and that authorities might show up to prevent us from jumping, we want to remind you once more of your personal responsibility. If you jump with us, you will do so on your own accountability. We inform you as good as we can so that you can take the decision yourself to jump or not to jump. We can perfectly understand if you refrain from entering the water under these circumstances but we still hope to see you in your bathing suit in Anderlecht at the BIG JUMP to show that you are demanding outdoor swimming places, not necessarily in the canal, in the future!

Voici un peu plus d'explications pour ceux qui ont du temps pour une longue lecture.
Nous avons maintenant les résultats des tests d'eau de Brulabo et nous pouvons affirmer que l'eau mardi matin au canal de Ceria-Coovi était d'une qualité extraordinaire en ce qui concerne les paramètres de l'eau de baignade. Vu les bons résultats obtenus l'année dernière, nous pouvons dire que l'eau du canal de Ceria-Coovi est en général de très bonne qualité (Enterococques, E.Coli, Salmonella). L'histoire pourrait se terminer ici et nous pourrions sauter dimanche sans doutes, s'il n'y avait pas les fortes pluies mercredi soir.
Bruxelles, comme de nombreuses villes à travers le monde, dispose d'un réseau unitaire d’assainissement. Cela signifie que les eaux usées et les eaux pluviales se retrouvent dans les mêmes tuyaux sous les rues et qu'elles vont toutes deux aux usines de traitement de l'eau dans le sud et le nord de Bruxelles pour être nettoyées. Ce n'est généralement pas un problème. Ce n'est que lors de rares moments de fortes pluies que les conduites ne peuvent pas absorber la quantité d'eau de pluie, ce qui entraîne des déversements d'eaux usées non traitées dans la Senne ou le canal, l'eau de pluie mélangée aux eaux usées des ménages et autres bâtiments. . Parlant franchement, la merde coule dans l'eau et la qualité s'aggrave.
Nous avons essayé de vérifier si cela s'est réellement passé mercredi soir mais malheureusement les administrations responsables ne peuvent pas le dire puisqu'elles ne se connaissent pas. Alors que la quantité d'eau dans les tuyaux collecteurs d'eaux usées est surveillée en permanence (voir www.flowbru.be), les données ne permettent pas de conclure si des débordements ont eu lieu ou non. Cela nécessite une visite personnelle sur place qu'il n'a pas été possible de programmer avec un si court préavis.
En raison de la procédure nécessaire pour les tests bactériens dans le laboratoire de Brulabo, un test supplémentaire avant le week-end n'était malheureusement pas non plus possible.
Cependant, selon les données disponibles, il n'y a pas de débordement dans la partie du canal à Bruxelles où nous prévoyons le BIG JUMP. L'eau du canal s'écoule lentement du sud au nord, les premiers points de débordement se situant à l'écluse d'Aa, en aval (vers le centre-ville) de l'écluse. Même si un débordement se produit, l'eau polluée ne semble pas atteindre la partie du canal plus haut où nous planifions le BIG JUMP. Malheureusement, nous n'avons pas pu obtenir d'informations sur les emplacements de débordement possibles dans la partie flamande du canal plus au sud, à Sint Pieters Leeuw.
Comme vous pouvez le voir, nous utilisons explicitement beaucoup le subjonctif dans cette explication car nous ne connaissons pas tous les détails et, surtout, nous ne pouvons pas garantir et ne pouvons pas assumer la responsabilité de la qualité de l'eau le dimanche au BIG JUMP.
Bien que nous soyons conscients de ce problème nous-mêmes, nous avons également reçu un message privé d'un employé du port nous le rappelant. Déjà avant nous avons été contactés indirectement par les responsables du port pour nous empêcher de sauter, même si nous n'avons jamais eu de problèmes dans le passé. Nous attendons donc que les autorités se présentent dimanche. Nous considérons le BIG JUMP comme un acte de désobéissance civile pour soulever le problème de la qualité de l'eau et du manque de baignade en plein air à Bruxelles et nous espérons que l'édition de cette année marquera un tournant pour amener les responsables autour de la table pour organiser officiellement la baignade dans le canal, même si ce n'est que pour l'événement annuel BIG JUMP pour le moment.
En raison des deux faits mentionnés, que la qualité de l'eau ne peut pas être garantie et que les autorités pourraient se présenter pour nous empêcher de sauter, nous tenons à vous rappeler une fois de plus votre responsabilité personnelle. Si vous sautez avec nous, vous le ferez sur votre propre responsabilité. Nous vous informons du mieux que nous pouvons afin que vous puissiez prendre vous-même la décision de sauter ou de ne pas sauter. Nous comprenons parfaitement si vous vous retenez d'entrer dans l'eau dans ces conditions mais nous espérons toujours vous voir dans votre maillot de bain à Anderlecht au BIG JUMP pour montrer que vous exigez des piscines extérieures, pas nécessairement dans le canal, à l'avenir !

Hier is een beetje meer uitleg voor degenen die tijd hebben voor een langere tekst.
We hebben nu de resultaten van de watertests van Brulabo en we kunnen stellen dat het water op dinsdagmorgen bij het kanaal van Ceria-Coovi van buitengewone kwaliteit was met betrekking tot de parameters voor zwemwater (Enterokokken, E.Coli, Salmonella). Gezien de goede resultaten vorig jaar zou je ook kunnen stellen dat het water van het kanaal bij Ceria-Coovi over het algemeen van zeer goede kwaliteit is. Het verhaal zou hier kunnen eindigen en we zouden gewoon op zondag kunnen springen, ware het niet voor de zware regenval op woensdagavond.
Brussel heeft, net als veel andere steden over de hele wereld, een 'gemengd rioolstelsel'. Het betekent dat rioolwater en regenwater beide in dezelfde buizen onder de straten terechtkomen en beide vloeien samen naar de waterzuiveringsinstallaties in het zuiden en noorden van Brussel. Dit is meestal geen probleem. Alleen op zeldzame momenten met zware regenval kan het voorkomen dat de leidingen de hoeveelheid regenwater niet aankunnen wat leidt tot het overlopen van onbehandeld rioolwater in de Zenne of het kanaal, dit is regenwater vermengd met rioolwater van huishoudens en andere gebouwen. Botweg, de shit stroomt over en de kwaliteit verslechtert.
We hebben geprobeerd te verifiëren of dat op woensdagavond echt gebeurde, maar helaas kunnen de verantwoordelijke instanties het niet zeggen omdat zij het zelf niet weten. Hoewel de hoeveelheid water in de grotere rioolcollectors voortdurend wordt bewaakt (zie www.flowbru.be), kunnen ze op basis van de gegevens niet concluderen of er overstromingen zijn opgetreden of niet. Dit vereist een persoonlijk bezoek ter plaatse dat niet op een zo korte termijn kon worden gepland.
Vanwege de noodzakelijke procedure voor bacteriële testen in het laboratorium van Brulabo was een aanvullende test voor het weekend helaas ook niet mogelijk.
Echter, volgens de beschikbare gegevens, zijn er geen overlopen in het deel van het kanaal in Brussel waar we de BIG JUMP plannen. Het water in het kanaal stroomt langzaam van zuid naar noord, de eerste overlooppunten bevinden zich aan het sluis van Aa, stroomafwaarts (richting het stadscentrum) van de sluis van Anderlecht. Zelfs als er een overloop geweest is, lijkt het vervuilde water niet naar het hoger gelegen deel van het kanaal te geraken waar we de BIG JUMP plannen. Helaas konden we geen informatie krijgen over mogelijke overstroomlocaties in het Vlaamse deel van het kanaal verder naar het zuiden, in Sint Pieters Leeuw.
We gebruiken echter expliciet veel de aanvoegende wijs in deze uitleg omdat we eenvoudigweg niet alle details kennen en, nog belangrijker, we dus de waterkwaliteit niet kunnen garanderen en ook niet de verantwoordelijkheid ervoor op ons nemen voor de BIG JUMP op zondag.
Hoewel we onszelf van dit probleem bewust zijn, kregen we ook een privébericht van een medewerker van de haven die ons eraan herinnerde. Reeds eerder werden wij indirect door havenambtenaren gecontacteerd om te voorkomen dat wij en jullie springen, ook al zijn we in het verleden nooit problemen tegengekomen. We verwachten daarom dat de autoriteiten op zondag zullen opduiken. We zien de BIG JUMP als een daad van burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid om het probleem van de waterkwaliteit en het gebrek aan openbaar openluchtzwemmen in Brussel aan te kaarten en we hopen dat de editie van dit jaar het keerpunt zal zijn om de verantwoordelijken rond de tafel te brengen om legaal zwemmen in het kanaal te bespreken en te organiseren, ook al is het op dit moment alleen voor het jaarlijkse BIG JUMP evenement.
Vanwege de twee genoemde feiten, dat de waterkwaliteit niet kan worden gegarandeerd en dat autoriteiten kunnen verschijnen om te voorkomen dat wij springen, willen we u nogmaals herinneren aan uw persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid. Als je met ons mee springt, doe je dat op eigen risico. We informeren u zo goed als we kunnen, zodat u zelf de beslissing kunt nemen om al dan niet te springen. We kunnen perfect begrijpen als je onder deze omstandigheden ervan afziet om te gaan zwemmen, maar we hopen nog steeds je in je badpak in Anderlecht te zien tijdens de BIG JUMP om te laten zien dat openluchtzwembaden, niet noodzakelijkerwijs in het kanaal, nodig zijn in de toekomst !
