Following a summer of water pleasure at THE BIGGEST POOL at Bozar, the only public outdoor pool in Brussels this summer, POOL IS COOL invites you to the lecture-debate about the future of public open air swimming in the Brussels Region.
Wouldn't you love to grab a towel on a hot summer day and plunge into an open air pool? Today there is no place to go to for an outdoor swim in Brussels, even though there were several outdoor pools in the past.
Internationally, swimming in the city became an important topic in the debate about public space and water in the urban environment. As a result, new swimming places were realized in cities all around the world, also in Belgium.
How can the re-introduction of public outdoor swimming in Brussels become a political priority? Which decisions should be taken and who will take up the lead to make it possible?
Following presentations of international references, we want to discuss the future of outdoor swimming in Brussels with representatives of the political and administrational life, responsible for the urban development and wellbeing of the Brussels citizens.
PRESENTATIONS:
Christophe Ribet (Paris), Deputy Director of the cabinet Célia Blauel in charge of water and environment of the city of Paris, will talk about the development and implementation of the ambitious “Plan for Swimming in Paris” (Plan Nager à Paris).
Ooze architects (Rotterdam) present the story of the Kings Cross Pond, a temporary swimming pond in the heart of London.

Après un été plein de plaisirs aquatiques à THE BIGGEST POOL à Bozar, la seule piscine publique à ciel ouvert de Bruxelles, POOL IS COOL vous invite à la conférence-débat sur le futur de la baignade urbaine en plein air dans la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale.
Aimeriez-vous saisir une serviette par une chaude journée d’été et plonger dans une piscine à ciel ouvert ? Aujourd'hui, il n’y a aucun endroit à Bruxelles où aller pour une baignade en plein air, alors qu’il y avait plusieurs piscines extérieures par le passé.
Sur le plan international, la baignade dans la ville est devenue un sujet important dans le débat sur l’espace public et l’eau en milieu urbain. De nouveaux lieux de baignade ont été réalisés dans les villes partout dans le monde, aussi en Belgique.
Comment la réintroduction de la baignade en plein air peut-elle devenir une priorité politique à Bruxelles ? Quelles décisions doivent être prises pour rendre cela possible ?
Suite aux présentations de références internationales, nous souhaitons discuter de l’avenir de la baignade en plein air à Bruxelles avec des représentants de la vie politique et administrative, responsables pour le développement urbain et la qualité de vie des citoyens de Bruxelles.

Na een zomer vol waterplezier dankzij THE BIGGEST POOL aan Bozar, het enige openluchtzwembad in Brussel, nodigt POOL IS COOL u uit voor een lezing en debat over de toekomst van zwemmen in openlucht in de Brusselse regio.
Wie wil er niet graag op een hete zomerdag een handdoek nemen en een duik nemen in een openluchtzwembad? Op dit moment is er geen enkele plek in Brussel waar je in de buitenlucht kan zwemmen, ook al waren er in het verleden wél buitenzwembaden.
Op internationaal vlak zien we dat zwemmen in de stad een belangrijk onderdeel werd in het debat over openbare ruimte en water in de stedelijke context. Als gevolg werden er nieuwe zwemplekken gecrëerd in steden over de ganse wereld, ook in België.
Hoe kan de herintroductie van publiek openlucht zwemmen een politieke prioriteit worden in Brussel? Welke beslissingen moeten hiervoor worden genomen en wie zal er het voortouw nemen om dit mogelijk te maken?
Na presentaties van internationale referentieprojecten, willen we in gesprek gaan over de toekomst van openlucht zwemmen in Brussel en dit met vertegenwoordigers van de politieke en administratieve wereld, verantwoordelijk voor de stedelijke ontwikkeling en het welzijn van de Brusselse inwoners.

Christophe Ribet (Parijs), Vice-directeur van het kabinet Célia Blauel verantwoordelijk voor water en leefmilieu, zal spreken over de ontwikkeling en uitvoering van het ambitieuze "Plan voor Zwemmen in Paris" (Plan Nager à Paris).
Ooze architecten (Rotterdam) lichten het verhaal van de Kings Cross Pond toe, een tijdelijke zwemvijver in het hart van Londen.

"La Baignade", la piscine du bassin de la Villette, Paris
Deputy Director of the cabinet of Célia Blauel, Assistant to the Mayor of Paris in charge of environment, sustainable development, water, the canals and the territorial climate energy plan, Christophe Ribet takes part in the “Strategy of adaptation to climate change” and the “Plan Nager à Paris”, the driving force behind the creation of urban swimming places for its citizens.
In this framework, he works on the bassin de la Villette where this summer, in the heart of Paris, a first exemple of an open air swimming area in the clean water of the bassin was realized. The following projects of urban swimming in Paris will be a site in the heart of the Bois de Vincennes and next the opening of multiple bathing sites in the Seine after the Olympics and Paralympics of 2024.
These projects translate the political will of the city of Paris to offer to Parisians sport spaces that will also function as areas of freshness during periods of high temperatures while at the same time concretizing actions that allow the city of Paris year after year to reclaim an excellent water quality.
Directeur adjoint du cabinet de Célia Blauel, Adjointe à la Maire de Paris Chargée de l’environnement, du développement durable, de l’eau, de la politique des canaux et du plan climat énergie territorial, Christophe Ribet intervient dans le cadre de la “Stratégie d’adaptation au changement climatique” de la Ville de Paris et du “Plan Nager à Paris” favorisants la création de baignades urbaines pour les habitants.
Il travaille ainsi sur la baignade Villette qui a ouvert lors de l’été 2017 au sein du bassin de la Villette dans le XIXe arrondissement de Paris, première réalisation d’une baignade en eau vive en plein cœur de Paris. La suite des projets parisiens de baignades urbaines verra l’ouverture d’un site en plein cœur du Bois de Vincennes à l’est de la ville avant l’ouverture de sites de baignade dans la Seine après les jeux olympiques et paralympiques de 2024.
Ces projets portent la volonté politique de la ville d’offrir des espaces sportifs aux parisiennes et parisiens, qui soient aussi des zones de fraicheur pour les périodes de fortes chaleurs, tout en concrétisant les actions qui permettent à la municipalité parisienne année après année de reconquérir une qualité de l’eau excellente.
Vice-directeur van het kabinet van Célia Blauel, Adjunct van de Burgemeester van Parijs, verantwoordelijk voor milieu, duurzame ontwikkeling, water, beleid der kanalen en het territoriale klimaat energie plan, Christopher Ribet neemt deel aan de "Strategie van aanpassing aan de klimaatverandering" en het "Plan Nager à Paris", de drijvende kracht achter de verwezenlijking van stedelijke zwemplekken voor zijn inwoners.
In dit kader werkt hij op het bassin de la Villette waar deze zomer, in het hart van Parijs, een eerste voorbeeld van openlucht zwemmen in het propere water van het bassin werd gerealiseerd. Het volgende project voor zwemmen in de stad is een site in het hart van het Bois de Vincennes, daarna de opening van meerdere zwemplekken in de Seine, na de Olympische en Paralympische Spelen van 2024.
Deze projecten vertalen de politieke wil van het bestuur van de stad Parijs om sportplaatsen aan zijn inwoners te bieden, plaatsen die eveneens fungeren als frisse zones bij hoge temperaturen. Tegelijkertijd concretiseren deze projecten de plannen van het stadsbestuur van Parijs om jaar na jaar een voortreffelijke waterkwaliteit te kunnen aanbieden.

Ooze is an international design practice operating in the fields of art and architecture. It’s based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and was founded by Eva Pfannes and Sylvain Hartenberg in 2003.
Ooze combines an understanding of ecological processes with technological expertise and insights into the social-cultural behavior of users of the built environment. Their projects balance imaginations of futures with urgent, current needs. They allow users to appropriate and develop a space.
Ooze strives to be a catalyst for change and believes that change is incremental. Each project is both, the product of a way of living and an idea of adapting this way of living to achieve a more social and ecological sustainability. The cyclic processes found in nature form the base for each intervention and integrate the human scale within a holistic urban strategy.
Recent projects comprise the Kings Cross Pond, a public temporary swimming pond in London and Agua Carioca in Rio De Janeiro about decentralized water management.

Ooze veut être un catalyseur de changement et affirme que le changement est incrémentiel. Chaque projet est à la fois le produit d’un mode de vie et l’adaptation de ce mode de de vie vers une durabilité sociale et écologique. Ooze combineert het begrip van ecologische processen met technologische expertise en inzicht in het sociaal-culturele gedrag van gebruikers van de gebouwde omgeving. Hun projecten zoeken een evenwicht tussen de verbeelde toekomst en dringende, huidige noden. Ze laten toe dat gebruikers hun ruimtes toe-eigenen en ontwikkelen.
Ooze wil een catalysator zijn voor verandering en gelooft dat verandering stapsgewijs verloopt. Elk project is beide, de uitkomst van een levenswijze en een idee van hoe deze levenswijze kan aangepast worden, meer sociaal en ecologisch duurzaam. Pascal Smet (sp.a) is since 2014 Minister of the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region, responsible for Mobility and Public Works, an office he also held between 2004 and 2009. During this period a first attempt was made to realize a new open air swimming pool in Brussels. He is also Minister, Member of the Board of the Flemish Community Commission (VGC), responsible for Culture, Youth, Sport and Urban Policy. Pascal Smet studied law at the university of Antwerp. He is active in the Brussels’ politics since 2003 on communal and regional level.
Pascal Smet (sp.a) est Ministre du Gouvernement de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale depuis 2014, chargé de la Mobilité et des Travaux publics, fonction qu'il a également occupé entre 2004 et 2009. Durant cette période, une première tentative a été effectuée pour réaliser une piscine en plein air à Bruxelles. Il est également Ministre, Membre du Collège de la Commission communautaire flamande (VGC), chargé de la Culture, de la Jeunesse, du Sport et de la Politique de la Ville. Pascal Smet a étudié le droit à l’Université d’Anvers. Il est actif dans la politique de Bruxelles depuis 2003 au niveau communal et régional.

Pascal Smet studeerde rechten aan de Uinversiteit Antwerpen. Sinds 2003 is hij actief in de Brusselse politiek op zowel communaal als regionaal niveau.
Alain Courtois
Alain Courtois (MR) is First Alderman of the City of Brussels and Alderman of Civil Status, Demography, Sports, Religious service, Family and Seniors. Alain Courtois, born in Brussels, has a degree in law. He began his career as a magistrate but soon moved to sports. In 1988 he was Secretary General of the Royal Belgian Football Association and later led the organization of Euro 2000. Courtois attaches great importance to the value of sport, and therefore he commits himself to all areas that have anything to do with this area.
Alain Courtois (MR) est premier Echevin de la Ville de Bruxelles et Echevin de l’Etat civil, de la Démographie, des Sports, des Cultes, de la Famille et des Seniors. Né à Bruxelles, Alain Courtois est licencié en droit. Il commence par être magistrat avant d’être pris par le virus du sport. En 1988, il devient le secrétaire général de la Fédération belge de football et, plus tard, on le retrouve à la tête de l’organisation de l’Euro 2000. Très attaché aux valeurs du sport, Alain Courtois n’a de cesse de se préoccuper de tout ce qui touche à ce secteur et aux domaines qui lui sont proches.

Alain Courtois, geboren in Brussel, is licentiaat in de rechten. Hij begint zijn loopbaan als magistraat maar krijgt al snel het sportvirus te pakken. In 1988 wordt hij secretaris-generaal van de Koninklijke Belgische Voetbalbond en leidt later de organisatie van Euro 2000. Hij hecht groot belang aan de waarden van de sport, en zet zich dan ook onvermoeibaar in op alle vlakken die ook maar iets te maken hebben met deze sector.
Kristiaan Borret
Kristiaan Borret has been bouwmeester maître architecte of the Brussels-Capital Region since 2015. In this role the bouwmeester takes up an active and independent stance in the urban and architectural development of Brussels. A civil engineer and architect by training (KU Leuven), Kristiaan Borret also holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and one in political science and public affairs (UCL), as well as a master’s degree in urban planning from Barcelona.
From 2006 to 2014, he was bouwmeester of the City of Antwerp. In this period the floating pool “Badboot” was realized in the city harbour of Antwerp.
Kristiaan Borret est bouwmeester maître architecte de la Région Bruxelles-Capitale depuis 2015.
