According to the news (bx1, Bruzz), 2018 will be the last issue of Bruxelles Les Bains at the canal close to the city centre before its move to another location. POOL IS COOL sees it as a huge opportunity to redefine its future.
Bruxelles Les Bains (BLB) was created 10 years ago to put the canal zone into the public view, an area which was at the time still decrepit and seen as a backside of the city. BLB is organized by BME (Brussels Major Events), one of the non-profit-organisations set-up by the City of Brussels, that also organizes the Brussels Summer Festival and the Plaisirs d’hiver.
The reason for the move of BLB next year is basically its success. The canal area today is up and coming, with upscale apartments for example in the highest housing tower of Belgium, new office buildings and the future cultural centre ‘Kanal - Centre Pompidou’. The area plays an important role in Brussels’ urban life of today. Nonetheless, in our opinion, the social and architectural aspect of this development is as arguable as the approach of BLB that led to this result. Conceived as a top-down-initiated leisure event based on the temporary commercialisation of public space it has no link with the local inhabitants or already present organisations. Still, BLB shares the faith in the Brussels’ summer as the time for outdoor enjoyment around the water and its success in attracting thousands of people from all over Brussels must be acknowledged. For this reason and since BLB, despite its name, never realized a real bath (or any swimming possibility) within its program we once considered a collaboration with BLB.
Before getting in contact with BOZAR in 2017, resulting in THE BIGGEST POOL, we were in serious negotiations to install a really cool pool at Bruxelles Les Bains (see picture above). We saw it as an opportunity to spread our message for permanent outdoor swimming to the people of Brussels. Still, BLB at that time prioritized a temporary bridge to the other side of the canal over the pool and was not able to raise additional funds for the pool project.
The relocation of BLB in 2019 coincides with the communal elections in late 2018. We see the move as a chance to look not only for a new place but also to redefine the mission and approach of BLB for the future, making it a festival that builds up on the local potential and opens it to a metropolitan public. In such a framework we can imagine to join the commission for the future of BLB, in order to support them in becoming what its name promises: the baths of Brussels! Not as an alternative to permanent open air swimming places, but as a first step that is easy to implement. A possibility that is demonstrated by many foreign examples.

Selon les nouvelles (bx1, Bruzz), 2018 sera la dernière édition de Bruxelles Les Bains sur le canal proche du centre-ville avant son déménagement vers un autre site. POOL IS COOL considère que cette relocation est une formidable opportunité de redéfinir son futur.
Bruxelles Les Bains (BLB) a été créée il y a 10 ans pour mettre la zone du canal à la vue du public, une zone à l'époque encore délabrée et considérée comme l'arrière de la ville. BLB est organisé par BME (Brussels Major Events), un ASBL mis en place par la Ville de Bruxelles, qui organise également le Brussels Summer Festival et Plaisirs d'hiver.
La raison du déménagement de BLB l'année prochaine est essentiellement son propre succès. Le quartier du canal est aujourd'hui en pleine expansion, avec des appartements de standing par exemple dans la plus haute tour de logements de Belgique, de nouveaux immeubles de bureaux et le futur centre culturel «Kanal - Centre Pompidou». Cette zone joue maintenant un rôle important dans la vie urbaine de Bruxelles aujourd'hui. A notre avis, l'aspect social et architectural de ce développement est aussi discutable que l'approche de BLB qui a en partie conduit à ce résultat. Conçu comme un événement de loisir initié en demarche descendante basé sur la commercialisation temporaire de l'espace public, il n'a aucun lien avec les habitants locaux ou les organisations déjà présentes. Pourtant, POOL IS COOL et BLB partagent la foi dans l'été bruxellois comme le temps pour le plaisir en plein air autour de l'eau et le succès de BLB à attirer des milliers de personnes de partout dans Bruxelles doit être reconnu. Pour cette raison et puisque BLB, malgré son nom, n'a jamais réalisé un vrai bain (ou aucune possibilité de baignade) dans son programme, nous avons déjà envisagé une collaboration avec BLB.
Avant d'entrer en contact avec BOZAR en 2017, avec THE BIGGEST POOL comme résultat, nous étions en négociations sérieuses pour installer une piscine vraiment cool à Bruxelles Les Bains (voir photo ci-dessus). Nous l'avons considéré comme une opportunité de diffuser notre message pour la baignade extérieure permanente aux Bruxellois. Pourtant, à l'époque, BLB a priorisé un pont temporaire vers l'autre côté du canal et n'a pas été en mesure de recueillir des fonds supplémentaires pour le projet de la piscine.
La réinstallation de BLB en 2019 suit les élections communales de fin 2018. Nous voyons le déménagement comme une opportunité de chercher non seulement un nouvel endroit mais aussi de redéfinir la mission et l'approche de BLB pour l'avenir, en faisant un festival qui construit sur et avec le potentiel local et l'ouvre à un public métropolitain. Dans un tel cadre on peut imaginer se joindre à la commission de réflexion pour l'avenir de BLB afin de les aider à devenir ce que son nom promet: la piscine à Bruxelles! Pas comme une alternative à une installation de baignade permanente en plein air, mais comme une première étape facile à mettre en œuvre. Une possibilité qui est démontrée par de nombreux exemples étrangers.

Volgens het nieuws (bx1, Bruzz) zal Brussel Bad in 2018 zijn laatste editie organiseren aan het kanaal, dicht bij het stadscentrum, alvorens naar een andere locatie te verhuizen. POOL IS COOL ziet het als de uitgelezen kans om hierbij ook zijn toekomst te herdefiniëren.
Brussel Bad werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om de kanaalzone in de publieke aandacht te plaatsen, een gebied dat in die tijd een beetje afgeleefd was en aanzien werd als een achterkant van de stad. BLB wordt georganiseerd door BME (Brussels Major Events), een door de Stad Brussel opgerichte non-profit-organisatie, die ook het Brussels Summer Festival en de Plaisirs d'hiver organiseert.
De reden voor de verhuis van Brussel Bad volgend jaar is uiteindelijk zijn succes. Het kanaalgebied is vandaag in opkomst, met dure appartementen onder andere in de hoogste woontoren van België, nieuwe kantoorgebouwen en het toekomstige culturele centrum 'Kanal - Centre Pompidou'. Het gebied is geen achterkant meer maar speelt nu een belangrijke rol in het hedendaagse stedelijke leven van Brussel. Naar onze mening is het sociale en architecturale aspect van deze ontwikkeling net zo betwistbaar als de benadering van Brussel Bad die mede tot dit resultaat heeft geleid. Ontworpen als een van bovenaf geïnitieerd vrijetijdsevenement gebaseerd op de tijdelijke commercialisering van de openbare ruimte, heeft het geen band met de lokale bewoners of reeds aanwezige organisaties. Toch deelt POOL IS COOL met Brussel Bad het geloof in de Brusselse zomer als een tijd voor buitenactiviteiten rondom het water en het succes van BLB om duizenden mensen uit verschillende hoeken van Brussel aan te trekken moet worden erkend. Om deze redenen en aangezien Brussel Bad, ondanks zijn naam, nooit een echt bad (of enige zwemmogelijkheid) binnen zijn programma realiseerde, heeft POOL IS COOL eens een samenwerking met BLB overwogen.
Voordat we in 2017 in contact kwamen met BOZAR, wat resulteerde in THE BIGGEST POOL, waren de onderhandelingen om een cht cool zwembad te installeren op Brussel Bad al ver gevorderd (zie foto hierboven). We zagen deze samenwerking als een kans om onze boodschap voor permanent openluchtzwemmen te verspreiden onder de Brusselaars. Toch gaf Brussel Bad uiteindelijk de voorkeur aan een tijdelijke brug naar de andere kant van het kanaal in plaats van een zwembad en waren zij niet in staat om extra budget op te halen voor het zwembadproject.
De verhuis van Brussel Bad in 2019 valt net na de gemeenteraads-verkiezingen eind 2018. We zien de relocatie als een kans om niet alleen naar een nieuwe plek te zoeken, maar ook om de missie en aanpak van Brussel Bad voor de toekomst opnieuw te definiëren naar een festival dat enerzijds bouwt op het lokale potentieel en het anderzijds opent voor een grootstedelijk publiek. In een dergelijk kader kunnen we ons voorstellen om deel te nemen in een werkgroep ter bepaling van de toekomst van Brussel Badt, om hen te ondersteunen in wat hun naam beloofd te zijn: het bad van Brussel! Niet als een alternatief voor permanente openluchtzwembaden, maar als een eerste stap die makkelijker valt te implementeren. Een mogelijkheid die wordt gedemonstreerd door vele buitenlandse voorbeelden.
