FLOW is the outdoor pool in Brussels this summer !
Have you been desperately waiting for the chance to splash around in the water on a hot summer day in Brussels? It is possible, this summer there is FLOW!
FLOW is an outdoor pool at the canal in Anderlecht, measuring 17 x 7 m. The pool is open for everyone in the afternoon, free of charge. You can book a time slot at the pool or on flow.brussels. Prior reservation is necessary to guarantee a pleasant and safe experience for all swimmers. Depending on the Covid measures in place you can experience an additional cultural program while swimming and in the evenings.
FLOW also fulfils a number of social ambitions besides being a public pool, such as employing young people from Brussels who are keen to contribute to the project.
FLOW must be a prototype for the swimming places to come, proving that outdoor swimming is necessary and possible in Brussels. In our dreams, it is a model for a permanent swimming pool in Biestebroeck, like a floating pool in the canal.
FLOW is a small pool but a big step to bring back outdoor swimming to Brussels.

FLOW is one of the summer activities in the Biestebroeck neighborhood. Follow Petite Eiland for more information.
The first swimming season will run from 1 July to 31 August 2021, but we hope that FLOW will become a success that can remain for the years to come. We already have ideas for the future to make FLOW more sustainable, to add activities in the cold months of the year and to foresee amenities that cater for the needs of swimmers and visitors alike. But first things first: If everything goes according to plan, the public will be welcome in the water from 1st of July!
A broadly-based project
POOL IS COOL joined forces with Decoratelier, Art2Work, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, FIX, Ecoworks and Speculoos + Variable to develop, build and run the first public outdoor pool in Brussels. Each of the partners is responsible for a specific aspect of FLOW such as design, identity and construction, management, technical infrastructures and communication, under the coordination of POOL IS COOL. Cultural programs in and around the pool are organized by Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Zinnema and Cinema Galeries.
Kunstenfestivaldesarts is an especially important partner of FLOW as co-producer, financial sponsor and organizer of the artistic installation and performance "What happens with a dead fish?" by Lina Lapelyte during the opening week.
The complexity of a swimming pool project is also reflected in the support the project receives. FLOW relies on the Flemish Government, the Brussels Government, the Flemish Community Commission, Brussels Environment, Brussels Mobility, Urban.brussels, the Port of Brussels, the Commune of Anderlecht, Quartier Biestebroeck asbl, and several sponsors.

“FLOW was built by many hands. To make this possible we went for a modular design. In Decoratelier (Molenbeek) a large group of local youth gathered during a few weeks to work on the parts together. Because of this FLOW is more than just a swimming pool. During and after construction, conversations took place about public space, privacy, police brutality and exclusion. Just last year these young people were barred from the Belgian coast; this year they are building a radically inclusive swimming spot in their own city. A body of water in and around which we might come together again.”
“ART2WORK dives into the FLOW pool with enthusiasm. In addition to the joys of summer swimming, there are many opportunities for young people from the canal districts. A good experience increases their chances on the labour market. In June, we provide technical support for the construction. In July and August, about twenty students take over the daily management of the pool. These young people are related to various local youth structures: Maison de Quartier Heyvaert - MOVE, Peterbos - D’Broej, Service de prévention d’Anderlecht. The young people make “their” swimming pool for all the inhabitants of Brussels.”
“Brussels has no public outdoor swimming pools. Although the debate has been going on for years, last summer, with thousands of families unable to travel, access to places of leisure became even more important. For instance, who has access to the coast? What attempts are being made for privatisation and the reiteration of logics of systemic discrimination? For summer 2021, Pool is Cool and Decoratelier, with the support of Kunstenfestivaldesarts, make the dream of many come true by building an open-air swimming pool next to the bridge Pierre Marchant, which is set to stay open all summer.”
“FIX is happy to contribute to FLOW with its teams. Our FIX workers are Brussels citizens who roll up their sleeves to make their city a better place.
We do this by renovating public facilities all over Brussels. An outdoor swimming pool brings the people of Brussels closer together and the FIX’ers will also be able to enjoy it to the full. Moreover, in this process, the FIX workers will learn many new techniques that will be of great value in their later search for work.”

FLOW est la piscine en plein air à Bruxelles cet été !
As-tu attendu désespérément l'occasion de barboter dans l'eau par une chaude journée estivale à Bruxelles ? C'est possible, cet été il y a FLOW !
FLOW est une piscine temporaire en plein air au bord du canal à Anderlecht avec des dimensions de 17 x 7 m. La piscine est ouverte gratuitement à tous l'après-midi. Vous pouvez réserver un créneau horaire à la piscine ou sur flow.brussels. La réservation préalable est nécessaire pour garantir une expérience agréable et sûre pour tous les nageurs. En fonction des mesures Covid mises en place, vous pourrez trouver un programme culturel supplémentaire pendant la baignade et en soirée.
Outre son rôle de piscine publique, FLOW répond à un certain nombre d'ambitions sociétales, comme l'emploi de jeunes Bruxellois désireux de participer au projet.
FLOW doit être un prototype pour les lieux de baignade à venir, prouvant que la baignade en plein air est nécessaire et possible à Bruxelles. Dans nos rêves, c'est un modèle pour une piscine permanente à Biestebroeck, comme une piscine flottante dans le canal.
FLOW est une petite piscine mais un grand pas pour ramener la baignade en plein air à Bruxelles.

La première saison de baignade va du 1er juillet au 31 août 2021, mais nous espérons que FLOW deviendra un succès qui pourra perdurer dans les années à venir. Nous avons déjà des idées pour l'avenir afin de rendre FLOW plus durable, d'ajouter des activités pendant les mois froids de l'année et de prévoir des aménagements supplémentaires qui répondent aux besoins des nageurs et des visiteurs. Mais chaque chose en son temps : si tout se passe comme prévu, le public sera le bienvenu dans l'eau dès le 1er juillet !
Un projet largement soutenu
POOL IS COOL s'est associé à Decoratelier, Art2Work, FIX, Ecoworks et Speculoos + Variable pour développer, construire et gérer la première piscine publique en plein air à Bruxelles. Chacun des partenaires prend en charge un aspect spécifique de FLOW tel que le conception, l'identité et la construction, la gestion, les infrastructures techniques et la communication, le tout coordonné par POOL IS COOL. Des programmes culturels supplémentaires autour de la piscine sont organisés par Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Zinnema et Cinema Galeries.

“FLOW a été construite par des mains multiples, ce qui a été rendu possible par sa conception modulaire. Au Decoratelier à Molenbeek, un groupe nombreux de jeunes du quartier s’est attelé pendant des semaines à en réaliser les éléments. De ce fait, FLOW est bien plus qu’une piscine. Au cours et après la construction se sont nouées des conversations à propos de l’espace public, de la protection de la vie privée, des violences policières et de l’exclusion. L’année dernière encore, ces jeunes n’étaient pas les bienvenus à la côte belge ; cette année ils ont construit de leurs propres mains un lieu de natation radicalement inclusif, un plan d’eau dans et autour duquel nous pourrons peut-être nous retrouver.”
“ART2WORK plonge avec enthousiasme dans la piscine FLOW. Outre les joies de la baignade estivale, de nombreuses opportunités sont offertes aux jeunes des quartiers du canal. Une chouette expérience augmente leurs chances sur le marché du travail. En juin, nous fournissons un soutien technique pour la construction. En juillet et août, une vingtaine d’étudiants assument la gestion quotidienne de la piscine. Ces jeunes fréquentent diverses structures de jeunesse locales : Maison de Quartier Heyvaert - MOVE, Peterbos - D’Broej, Service de prévention d’Anderlecht. Les jeunes font “leur” piscine pour tous les Bruxellois.”
“Bruxelles ne dispose pas d’une piscine publique en plein air. Si la polémique existe depuis longtemps, le manque d’espaces de loisirs est devenu criant l’été dernier face aux milliers de familles interdites de voyage. Qui peut se rendre à la côte ? Où se nichent les tentatives de privatisation et où se répètent les logiques de discrimination systémique ? Au cours de l’été 2021, Pool is Cool et Decoratelier exauceront, avec le Kunstenfestivaldesarts, le vœu de nombreux·ses Bruxellois·ses : une piscine en plein air accessible tout l’été, aux abords du pont Pierre Marchant. ”

FLOW IS HET OPENLUCHTZWEMBAD IN BRUSSEL DEZE ZOMER!
Wacht jij ook al lang op een kans om tijdens een hete zomerdag in Brussel in het water te kunnen plonsen? Dat kan, deze zomer is er FLOW!
FLOW is een tijdelijk openluchtzwembad aan het kanaal in Anderlecht, met afmetingen van 17 x 7 m. In de namiddagen is het zwembad gratis toegankelijk voor iedereen. Bezoekers kunnen een tijdslot reserveren aan het zwembad of op flow.brussels. Vooraf reserveren is noodzakelijk om alle zwemmers een aangename en veilige ervaring te garanderen. Afhankelijk van de geldende Covid-maatregelen kunt u tijdens het zwemmen en 's avonds een aanvullend cultureel programma verwachten.
FLOW vervult naast de rol van openbaar zwembad ook een aantal maatschappelijke ambities, zoals het tewerkstellen van Brusselse jongeren die graag mee hun schouders onder het project zetten.
FLOW moet een prototype worden voor de zwemplaatsen van de toekomst, en bewijzen dat buitenzwemmen noodzakelijk en mogelijk is in Brussel. In onze dromen staat het model voor een permanent zwembad in Biestebroeck, zoals een drijvend zwembad in het kanaal.
FLOW is maar een klein zwembad maar een grote stap om openluchtzwemmen terug te brengen naar Brussel.

Een breed gedragen project
POOL IS COOL sloeg de handen in elkaar met Decoratelier, Art2Work, FIX, Ecoworks en Speculoos + Variable om het eerste openbare openluchtzwembad in Brussel te ontwikkelen, te bouwen en uit te baten. Elk van de partners staat in voor een specifiek aspect van FLOW: ontwerp, identiteit en constructie, beheer, technische infrastructuur en communicatie, gecoördineerd door POOL IS COOL. “FLOW werd gebouwd door vele handen. Om dit mogelijk te maken gingen we voor een modulair ontwerp. In Decoratelier (Molenbeek) vervaardigde een grote groep jongeren uit de buurt wekenlang samen de onderdelen. Daardoor is FLOW meer dan een zwembad. Tijdens en na het bouwen ontstonden gesprekken over publieke ruimte, privacy, politiegeweld en exclusie. Vorig jaar nog werden deze jongeren aan de Belgische kust geweerd, dit jaar bouwen ze zelf een radicaal inclusieve zwemplek. Een waterlichaam waarin en waarrond we misschien weer kunnen samenkomen.”
“ART2WORK springt enthousiast mee in het FLOW-bad. Naast zomers zwemplezier worden er vele kansen geboden aan jongeren uit de kanaalwijken. Een fijne ervaring verhoogt hun kansen op de arbeidsmarkt. In juni leveren we technische steun voor de bouw van de infrastructuur. In juli en augustus staan een twintigtal studenten in voor het dagelijks beheer van het zwembad. Deze jongeren zijn verbonden aan verschillende lokale jeugdwerkingen: Buurthuis Heyvaert - MOVE, Peterbos - D’Broej, Preventiedienst Anderlecht. De jongeren maken “hun” zwembad voor alle Brusselaars.”
“Brussel heeft geen publieke openluchtzwembaden. Hoewel het debat al enkele jaren aan de gang is, kwam het prangende gebrek aan ruimte voor vrijetijdsbesteding de voorbije zomer nadrukkelijk naar voor toen duizenden families het reizen werd verhinderd. Wie heeft bijvoorbeeld toegang tot de badplaatsen aan onze kustlijn? Welke pogingen tot privatisering bestaan er, en waar wordt de logica van systematische discriminatie herhaald? Tijdens de zomer van 2021 slaan Pool is Cool en Decoratelier de handen in elkaar om samen met de steun van het Kunstenfestivaldesarts de droom van velen waar te maken. Naast de Pierre Marchant brug zullen ze een openluchtzwembad bouwen dat de hele zomer open blijft.”

Dat doen we met renovatiewerken in publieke voorzieningen, verspreid over heel Brussel. Een openluchtzwembad brengt Brusselaars dichter bij elkaar en ook de FIX’ers zullen hier volop van kunnen mee genieten. Bovendien zullen de FIX’ers bij dit proces veel nieuwe technieken leren die een grote meerwaarde zijn bij hun latere zoektocht naar werk.”

Het belang van dit project is enorm: niet alleen zorgt het voor kwaliteitsvolle en veilige sportinfrastructuur, het zet expliciet in op verbinding met de buurt en de bewoners. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat veel Brusselaars hier lang naar hebben uitgekeken. Het is een absolute meerwaarde voor de stad, het brengt ons dichter bij elkaar en geeft perspectief op een mooie en hopelijk meer zorgeloze zomer. Ik ben dan ook bijzonder tevreden dat we als Vlaamse Regering hier onze schouders mee onder kunnen zetten.”

“Ik ben verheugd met de komst van een tijdelijk openluchtzwembad naast de vele andere evenementen die de hele zomer in Brussel zullen plaatsvinden en die ons Gewest na een maandenlange lockdown weer tot leven zullen brengen. Dit project ligt mij des te nauwer aan het hart, omdat het vorm zal krijgen in een sociaal zeer verscheiden wijk die momenteel een heuse gedaanteverandering ondergaat. Ik hoop dat zowel de Brusselaars als de toeristen dankzij het FLOW-project een hele zomer lang aan de rand van het kanaal verfrissing zullen kunnen vinden!”
“Ik ben blij dat de Brusselaars in de zomer een duik kunnen nemen in een openluchtzwembad, zich kunnen ontspannen en afkoelen. Water speelt een essentiële rol in de stad, als klimaatregelaar, als plaats om te wandelen en je batterijen op te laden, maar ook als recreatieve infrastructuur. Daarom werk ik samen met de Brusselse regering aan de aanleg van een permanente openluchtzwemzone in Brussel. Dit Pool is Cool project is een goede stap in die richting.”
“Al lang snakt Brussel opnieuw naar een openluchtzwembad! Terwijl de plannen om daar effectief werk van te maken, op de tekentafels liggen, juichen we het initiatief van Pool is cool toe en hebben we het mee ondersteund vanuit de subsidielijn imago van de Brusselse regering. Dit door tal van partners mee gedragen project toont aan hoe Brusselaars bereid zijn mee te werken aan een betere stad.”
“De lockdowns tijdens deze pandemie en de hittegolven van vorige zomers hebben ons duidelijk gemaakt hoe groot de nood is aan extra publieke ruimte in Brussel waar mensen zich kunnen ontspannen en verfrissen. Samen met de invoering van een nieuw circulatieplan om de wijk rustiger te maken zal dit project ervoor zorgen dat klein en groot kunnen genieten van een nieuwe, rustige plek tijdens de zomervakantie.”
“Tijdens de COVID-crisis is nog meer dan ooit duidelijk geworden dat onze inwoners nood hebben aan ontspanning en buitenactiviteiten dichtbij huis. In de Biestebroeck wijk hebben we veel open ruimte om dergelijke initiatieven te verwelkomen en initiatiefnemers als Pool is Cool zien het potentieel in een wijk in ontwikkeling. Om hier een mooie zomer uit te bouwen, werken verschillende diensten samen om een autovrije zone te realiseren rond jeugd-, cultuur- en sportactiviteiten en is er overleg en afstemming met politie en preventie. We leggen hiermee de basis voor een nieuwe, dynamische ontwikkeling van de wijk en bij uitbreiding de hele gemeente. In de komende weken meer nieuws over wat je nog allemaal kan verwachten deze zomer!”
“De vzw Biestebroekwijk, die de in het gebied actieve vastgoed- en economische actoren verenigt, is financieel betrokken bij het Flow-project. Zij is verheugd zich te associëren met dit vlaggenschipproject voor de wijk, dat samen met haar eigen initiatieven en die van andere actoren ertoe bijdraagt de Biestebroekwijk in de verbeelding van de Brusselaars te schrijven en haar een identiteit te geven als een vriendelijke en vreedzame plaats.”
